They should just all be rounded up and locked inside that church, indefinitely.

Does anyone know what age(s) kids are usually vaccinated here in CH against measles? I'm hoping my 2-year old has been properly vaccinated by now, especially since he just began a new Krippe. Can't seem to remember what he has (and has not yet) been vaccinated against at this point.

Re: Are you vaccinated against measles?

My ped gave the 1st dose at 9 mo, and the other at 12 mo. Some peds do it a bit later (1-1.5) but she prefers doing it a bit early because of the epidemics.

Normally your daughter should be vaccinated, if you followed the 'recommanded' vaccination plan.

Yes, I did. Thanks.

We have some friends who never vaccinated their son, who is about 6 mos. older than our son. I get a bit nervous every time we're together.

I hope that all the Krippes here require all the kids to be fully vaccinated.

We are laughing now, but when I was ill, before knowing exactly what I have, I carried on my businesses as usual...meeting people etc. After the eruption and feeling really not well, I stayed at home and had plenty of time on my hands just to introspect my memory and think of whom I could have met and spread it, and the image of a pregnant shop assistant just made me really sad, luckily I remember I just asked something, from quite a distance, and didn't buy anything.
So people should really think twice, you might affect different categories whose immune system are either very fragile, or are in a situation when they really, really shouldn't get any disease.

4 years ago we had a quite important epidemic at UNIL where I work and my kids go to daycare. The daycare required a proof of vaccination, and non-vaccinated kids were to stay at home for the duration of the epidemic, as instructed by the cantonal doctor.

This is also to protect the young babies who were too young to get the vaccine.

That being said, I'm not sure a daycare can require that the kids are vaccinated. But they can exclude said kids in case of epidemic.

I think there may be cantonal variations here. In Neuchatel vaccination is mandatory and you have to show proof of vaccination to school, daycare etc.

Re: Are you vaccinated against measles?

We did have to show proof of vaccination at my son's new Krippe here in Naenikno/Greifensee. But I'm not sure if that means that they require all children there to be vaccinated. I suppose I should ask...

I just wish there was a vaccine against the Norovirus.

There is!

It's a liquid to drink. Kids need two doses of it at a month interval.

Your ped can prescribe it to you (mine did), but basic insurance won't pay for it. It's a bit expensive, about 100.- per dose if I remember well. But totally worth it in my opinion!

There is also a flu vaccine available for kids via a nasal spray.

Really? I didn't think one was available yet. I thought it was a few years away from sale.

As far as I'm aware it is still a few years away from sale. I believe they are just about to finish the early stage human studies so it will be a while yet before it comes onto the market.

I might have confused things.

I was referring to the Rotarix vaccine, that protects again the Rotavirus, a particularly nasty stomach bug.

Moreover the intra-nasal flu vaccine isn't available (yet) in Switzerland.

Oh yes rotavirus is horrible. Our son was hospitalised for five days because of it when he was two and both OH and I caught it from him. It was horrendous.

I was actually working on the Rotarix vaccine back in Belgium before we moved here.

Seeing as some epidemics occur widely in vaccinated kids, I think I'd be nervous having my vaccinated baby go in too. I guess you just vaccinate and hope for the best.

Also, anyone know the stance in Switzerland on the rotavirus vaccine and breastfeeding? I saw a study suggesting breast milk antibodies reduced the effectiveness of it and there was some information from the CDC on potentially delaying breastfeeding. What's the protocol here?

I breasted my daughter for ages, my ped knew it, and she never said anything about it. So I guess there's no precise protocol here (yet).

But it's a very unusual vaccine, not covered by basic insurance. My daughter got it because I specifically asked for it. The ped was a bit surprised. So I suppose a protocol might come, at a later date.

P.S: I wasn't aware of this study, thanks!

My ped talked about but did not reccommend it since not so spread here in CH like in other countries (his words not mine)

I was actually thinking of doing it anyway as we often travel and I want to be covered.

Thing is, stomach bugs can come from a variety of viruses, and not only the rotavirus.

However, and I might be mistaken, I feel that the vaccine also attenuates the other kind of stomach bugs. My daughter got a lot less tummy bugs than the other kids in her daycare. But that's not very scientific!

Oh yes. The money hungry producers of vaccines do suggest that you deprive your young babies of your highly nourishing and protective breastmilk in order to improve the efficacy of a vaccine.

Here is the link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3704726/

Quote:
In conclusion, our findings indicate that the neutralizing activity of breast milk could be one of the many factors that might explain the lower observed immunogenicity and effectiveness of live oral rotavirus vaccines among children in developing countries. These data should encourage clinical trials to investigate whether delaying breast-feeding for a short period before and after giving the vaccine could reasonably improve the immune response and protective efficacy. Since all live oral rotavirus vaccines are potentially susceptible to interference from breast milk neutralizing activity and other factors such as maternal antibody and other enteric flora, a parenteral vaccine with nonliving rotavirus (eg, inactivated vaccine) should be pursued as an alternative that will provide an insurance policy to the global immunization agenda against rotaviruses.26

I have to agree with UG on this one. It sounds ludicrous to suggest that one delay breastfeeding (healthy, natural, done for thousands of years) in favor of a vaccine. How about delaying the vaccine instead?

But if you read the whole thing it says that the Indian women in the study tended to feed their baby in the clinic which was then interfering with the vaccine. The suggestion to delay breast-feeding would probably have been better worded as "temporarily suspend", as in don't feed the baby immediately before, during or after the administering of the oral vaccine.

Quote:

Suddenly it's not quite so dramatic...

EDIT - It even states that the inhibitor found in women's breastmilk in developing countries is not found (at least in significant concentration to affect vaccine efficacy) in the breastmilk of women in developed countries.
