Rushkinoff Cough? Is this legit?

So my just-graduated son traveled to Magaluf with his buddies from school for a week of fun in the sun, complete with club-hopping every night.

He has returned in one piece, for which I am thankful, however 10 days post-trip finds him still coughing like he has either a) contracted pertussis; or b) smoked two packs a day for the last 40 years.

He is claiming that several of his friends are ill as well, and points to online stories of the dreaded Rushkinoff cough. Considering that he is only 18 and vaccinated, I am beginning to give this idea a bit of credit (although he is getting no detectable sympathy from me ).

Anyone here admit to a similar experience? If so, how long until the cough dissipated?

Re: Rushkinoff Cough? Is this legit?

I think the Ruskhinoff is BS myself.

More likely the immune system takes a hell of a battering when the body has been put through intense binge drinking, with minimal sleep, non stop environment.

When the lads go on hols, the Friday/Saturday night 6-7 hour drink sesh in the local clubs and pubs is turned into a 7 or 14 day session of 12 hour + binges, in the sweltering sun, with no rest, drawing on every last energy and mineral reserve rendering the body barely functioning.

I have had it a dozen times and look forward to it again soon, it's generally worth it.

Add to that that the plane ride home will expose you to anything airborne that other people have got, then you have a recipe for infection.

Dodgy vodka, my rear end.

You shouldn't turn down pertussis, even if your son's vaccinated. There's more and more cases in Switzerland, it's slowly creeping back as most people don't do their booster vaccines.

That being said, there's a bug going around at the moment which makes you cough for weeks. Both my son and I got it. I coughed like an old smoker for a good 3 weeks, it was exhausting.

Re: Rushkinoff Cough? Is this legit?

I've caught walking pneumonia twice after flying. Called mycoplasma - if you've been having a good time, and your immune system is a bit tired - you can end up with this. Low grade fever, bitch of a cough for about 2-3 weeks. Needed an antibiotic to get rid of it in the end.

Re: Rushkinoff Cough? Is this legit?

Cosmo generally isn't a reliable source for medical information...unless it's about vaginas.

Both my husband and I had pertussis, whooping cough as it is more commonly known, last autumn even though both of us were vaccinated. Neither of us suspected it as, well, we were vaccinated and didn't know anyone with it...until my neighbor who is a nurse told me she was diagnosed. It's also crafty in the way that it can come and go.

To confirm a case takes a bit of time due to having to run a culture, but azithromycin is the 'cure'. There have been epidemics of it both in the UK and the US in the last year or so. It's becoming such an issue that adults are now being asked to get boosters. Take him to the doc.

Well of course it is. Exactly what do they think it is, some sort of alcohol-feeding virus?

I have been twice admittedly, about 11 years ago and 6 years ago.

I sought out my first hotel on my return and the same rep, aged significantly in 5 years, was still working there.

Some people never return.

Eh, Id say it was a dodgy Kebab!

Going to Mallorca in June . . . Im not quite ready to let go of my youth.
Shall stay clear of the vodka . . . it makes me randomly fall over... rather like "Fainting Goats" - You tube it!

Those things usually are viral. Well, it passed by itself without antibiotics anyway

Re: Rushkinoff Cough? Is this legit?

*please* get them to the doctor and get it tested.

Pertussis vaccine doesn't last forever (the official estimate is around 10 years) and adults can carry the infection around for a long time and expose many other people to it before they finally get it treated by the doctor.
