Re: Gynecological Exams in Switzerland: What to expect

I had my checkup today and noticed that my doctor has cards for 2 different websites that may be useful for some here.

Swissmom.ch available in German

meno-pause.ch available in French and German

Both sites look very informative and although not in English Google's translate function seems to be getting better

Re: Gynecological Exams in Switzerland: What to expect

THis is such a useful thread, thanks everyone. Just to add my 2 cents worth, I had my first pap smear here in CH this summer and it is much much more extensive than the ones I was used to in the UK. Not only do they do the smear, but also a breast exam and an internal exam. I say that not to put people off, but just to be prepared - my doctor didn't give me any warning but just pretty much dived in there, and if I'd have known it was coming it would have been much less unpleasant. I was very grateful for the breast exam though as I have no idea what an ominous lump would feel like.

My other piece of advice is that they give you a urine test (or at least my doctor did), so don't do what I did and make sure that you've squeezed every drop of pee out of your body before walking into the surgery.

I also believe that it's covered by the basic insurance, outside of your excess, so your insurance always pays. I may have got that wrong though (my German's not so great) so feel free to correct me.

No, it hasn't been covered by my basic insurance. Some supplemental insurances will cover it though, if they have allowances for preventative measures.

Un frottis.

You can precise un frottis vaginal (as you can do a frottis in the throat too, to check for strep).

I think if I'm at the gynaecologist, they'll know where to frotter! (Thanks )

Re: Gynecological Exams in Switzerland: What to expect

You have to remember that the stuff we have written in such detail is only supposed to forewarn you, not scare you. If you think about it, if you were to write every detail of any sort of previous medical examination, doctor, gynae or dentist, it might sound quite horrifying too.

I can certainly think of nicer ways to spend the afternoon, but my gynae's description of her ascent of Piz Palü with her husband was quite interesting...

5 mins with no pants on, and enduring the speculum/spatula experience = uncomfortable and awkward.
Risking full-blown undiscovered cervical cancer = terrifying and deadly.

I know which I would prefer.

Re: Gynecological Exams in Switzerland: What to expect

I've only had male gynaes here, but they've all been respectful, if direct. One was Asian born/trained, but seemed to be aware of how things were done in US and had covers for the lap, and he explained what he was doing as he went along, so if that's important to you search for someone not trained here. I have my family thanks to my gynae here, and he probably went beyond his duty to help us, and to ensure my pregnancies went well. I have to ask my gynae what's going on if I want to know, but I've been well taken care of and if I've had concerns or questions he was always open to discussion or to do tests.

If you've been BF or go for your 6 week check up, you may find your breasts/nipples are given a bit of a squeeze!

In my GP's practice there are some GPs that were trained as gynaecologists and I would imagine they could do smears, but think they'd prefer this is handled by the GP. Seems they like to keep the lines drawn here...

I went for my regular check up last week and having read this thread paid more attention than usual to the general procedure here.

In short the visit went something like this :

Sit down at desk and general chat with doc who asks if there's any specific issue etc
Go behind curtain and take of top half clothing. There was a gown available to wear if desired.
Sit in chair and doc examines breasts.
Go back behind curtain, put top back on and take of pants. ( I followed the advice on here and wore a skirt)
Sit in chair with legs in air while doctor examines down below
( have a bit of a laugh when doc falls off stool when turning round- this part is optional )
Go behind curtain and put pants back on
Go back to desk, doctor says everything looks fine and if I don't hear from her in next three weeks there's nothing to worry about.
Make appointment for a year's time and leave.

All in all I think it was the least uncomfortable exam I have ever had in all the countries I've lived in, largely because she didn't use the metal speculum that I've always had elsewhere.

Nothing at all to worry about and as Sandgrounder says infinitely preferable to cervical cancer.

Re: Gynecological Exams in Switzerland: What to expect

Thank you for all the useful posts, I do have one question however..

I usually get my repeat prescription of Marvelon (birth control pills) when I'm back in england and the dr gives me 6 months worth to keep me ticking over but now I need to get some here as I am too busy with work to get back to the UK..
My question is however, who do i see to get these?!

In england its just a GP but I know all the US ladies will visit a Gynaecologist, to be honest the thought of having an exam just to get my prescription is unnecessary and terrifying! But I don't want to go to my GP and have the embarrassing conversation asking for it if they don't give it!

Someone please help!

I get mine from my GP who is just a GP. Health insurance wont re-emburse the cost of contraceptives in Switzerland.

Re: Gynecological Exams in Switzerland: What to expect

I've gotten my birth control Rx from GPs and from my gynecologist. They didn't have the pill that I was taking before, so there was a frustrating adjustment period trying out new pills.

I third (fourth?) the suggestion to wear a skirt. I always wear a dress and it makes a world of difference to me. It's also nice that you can pull it down a bit if you get stuck hanging out in the chair.

Compared to my experiences in the US, the exam is more painful - I think it's a style thing and the metal instruments instead of plastic ones. Also they sometimes use vinegar to prep the area, which is as horrifying as it sounds.

On the positive side, I really like how you meet fully clothed with the doctor at the desk before and after the exam, instead of awkwardly sitting in a paper gown while they talk to you like in the US.

I also think they do much better breast exams here. At the risk of sharing TMI, I have fibrocystic breasts (aka they naturally have lumps in them) and so they're hard to examine. I was really impressed when my gyn pulled out an ultrasound machine to check them, and did so thoroughly.

Off topic, but I also find the dermatologists here do excellent and thorough mole checks.

And a tip - my gynecologist gave me an Rx for something called "Premens" (funny name), which is an herbal remedy that really helps with PMS. The herb is chaste tree extract (also a funny name!). I was amazed that a herbal remedy was available by Rx and covered by my insurance.

Ugh, feel quite sick and faint reading this thread to be honest, I have certain anxiety issues with this type of thing, I know it's silly and childish at my age (33) after having children as well but I honestly cannot help it Surely I can't be the only one, how do I go about getting the type of treatment I need?

Although mine was in France it was similar to the above and different to the US and UK version.

I guess the good thing it's a once a year thing.

I would try to find a female doctor and be upfront. You know a lot of women don't get checks due to feeling uncomfortable with it all. So you shouldn't feel silly, it's actually common.

The advice of a skirt, or bringing a cardigan could be useful. I felt a bit odd sitting there naked.

Pixie, have you found a gynecologist yet? If not,

Dr Beatrice Hung Schreppers:
http://www.frauenpraxis-am-kreisel.c...ung-schreppers

She is very kind, thorough, and patient. I believe she speaks English as well (although I have only spoken German with her.) Her practice is in Altendorf, not too far from you. I would expect there would be a wait for a new patient routine appointment, as English-speaking female gynecologists seem to be scarcer than hen's teeth in Schwyz.
