Re: Flu shots?

I really have no views regarding flu vaccinations, but now I'm tempted to get one because last year, my entire family was sick alllll Winter long due to my son's germ-factory of a daycare.

Does anyone here have any experience to share regarding whether or not they actually were sick less often, after having a flu shot? I hate the thought of going through another winter being constantly sick.

I believe it is reimbursed if you have a GP plan.
We do and it wasn't.

It was reimbursed by the supplementary cover though.

Mine was. Maybe because I have asthma?

Flu shots?

Huh. Mine's never reimbursed and i've had cancer. It's also chf 25 so i don't much care. I thought it was reimbursed for people with GP. Oh well.

My husband's going to get his at uni zrh next week (he works there) and it will be free.

As for being sick less, i don't know. I had three really awful cases of walking pneumonia (mycoplasma) between 1997 and 2001. I started getting flu shots and haven't had one since. But i don't really see how it could be related. I've had a few colds, nothing really bad over the last 10-12 years. But that might be because I've learned to be more careful about hand washing and am even more antisocial than before.

Re: Flu shots?

I have 2 questions regarding the flu shot:

1) I want to get the shot, but don't have a GP - we have the telmed option - does anyone know where else I could get it done (in Fribourg). I asked my local pharmacy, and the telmed advisor, but they didn't know. As far as I know, my workplace (Uni. Fribourg) doesn't offer it.

2) I'm breastfeeding at the moment, and friends in the US who are in the same situation have gotten a vaccine without preservatives. Is this an option here?

Thanks!

Do you have a gyn? Or does your child have a doctor? I'd ask there. They might also know about versions appropriate for breast feeding mothers.

Good point. My gyn definitely won't help, but I'll call the babies' pediatrician and ask. I've been going down the list of doctors, and no one will do it!

Seriously? That absolutely sucks - the gyn can't even suggest someone? I got mine from my oncologist, just because i traveled in October and wanted it before i went. You might also check again with the uni - i know uni zrh does it, just not sure who.

I had the shot and didn't get sick. Therefore, it must work.

If you want scientific data, instead of a few anecdotes, have a look at the CDC's website:

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/vaccineeffect.htm

To summarize for the general adult population: "One study showed that flu vaccination was associated with a 71% reduction in flu-related hospitalizations among adults of all ages".

To test this theory, watch the next ten posts on this thread. If seven people got the vaccine and didn't get the flu, and three people got the vaccine and got sick anyhow, then you'll know that English Forum is statistically in-line.

A few months into my (very) complicated twin pregnancy, he told me there was nothing he could do for me, and woudn't refer me to anyone else . I had to find a high-risk pregnancy specialist myself - and ended up bed-ridden at the Frauenklinik in Bern for 7+ weeks! So I doubt he'd help out in this case...

I'm wondering if a nurse would do it. It's quite frustrating, as there are several doctors in my family in France who could easily give me the shot, but they are all too far away.

My partner and I asked our doctors to write a prescription for a non-adjuvanted flu vaccine because well, i'm sick of the fever after the flu shot every year. We picked it up at the pharmacy and the doctor gave it to us. So I'm assuming you can go to any walk-in clinic like permanence and ask for a prescription to a flu vaccine and either do it yourself or go back to the doctor and have the medical assistants do it.

http://compendium.ch/prod/agrippal-s...j-2013-2014/fr It's listed as 2013-2014, but i think it's a typo since it definitely said 2014-2015 when we picked it up.

According to the compendium write-up, this vaccine is fine from the second trimester onward.

Wow, I'm so sorry. What a jerk. You need a new gyn. Are you in Bern? There's a permanenence clinic there. Maybe they would do it.

A nurse could do it - usually a nurse does mine at the doctor's.

I'm in Fribourg, but think I'll travel to Bern if there's a permanence clinic there. And yes, I need a new gyn!

There is a poly clinic in Neuchatel that does them too but it's probably easier for you to go to Bern. I'd be surprised if there wasn't somewhere similar in Fribourg where you could get it done.
Maybe try calling the hospital, they should know somewhere that does them nearer to you.

Tried that already - they had no idea - the only suggestion (again) was to call every doctor in the phone book!

Re: Flu shots?

My medical center in Bern has received their supplies of the flu' vaccine, and tomorrow I will get my anti-flu' vaccination. I choose a time when I can afford to be mildly ill for the following two weeks.

To the people that have had flu' symptoms after the vaccination, I ask "What would have happened if you had caught the flu' without the taking the attenuated vaccine?"

The 1918 influenza pandemic was very bad https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic

Re: Flu shots?

Mine starts next Monday.

According to a news report last week (was in one of the Swiss French papers but can't remember which one) the vaccine this year should have a 60% + coverage which is good as some years it is less since there are too many changes in the virus from the time they decide to manufacture the vaccine and when the virus hits the northern hemisphere.

The national flu vaccination day is November 16th. Details on this link plus a link to doctors who are participating that is not yet on-line.

Re: Flu shots?

Give your GP a call. Most of them here in Zurich do the shots in the practice, but they like to have a bit of a warning so they know how much vaccine to order. My Ex used to start asking patients and sending letters at the beginning of October. She had a deal with a couple of largish companies where she would visit them at lunchtime a couple of times over the space of a few weeks and bill the company a fixed price per shot.

Re: Flu shots?

Just got mine free from work. It's the first time I've ever had a 'flu shot, but after getting this heavy cold that is going around a month ago (and still coughing) I know my immunity levels are lower than when I caught the 'flu two years ago and got a 2ndary infection after. Not worth the risk this time.

Been getting a flu jab for years. Have never been ill from the jab. Once or twice had soreness in muscle but even that passed quickly.

It certainly cannot hurt, and it could be of help.
