Flu shots?

Please do not respond by telling me to take Vitamin D instead because vaccines are evil and some type of government scam, or simply money-making business, etc., etc. Save that for your own thread please if you want to discuss it.

My question is how are flu shots administered here in Switzerland? In the States, they were free at my HMO's buildings and they were also readily available to anyone in the grocery stores for a small fee. During the next few weeks is the time we would always get them.

Is it similar here or do I need to make a special appointment with my doctor? Can anyone receive them or are they only covered for high-risk patients? Any other info about how and when to get them would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Flu shots?

My husband is offered it because he has a medical condition but he still has to make an appointment with his doctor.

I say "offered" but for the last 5 years he's not bothered with it. Not for any other reason other than he just forgot. Plus he's a man and thinks that doctors should only be visited when something is dropping off or oozing...

Re: Flu shots?

My OH's company offers it free for all their employees every year.
I was at my doctor's yesterday and they had a notice in the waiting room saying that they would be administering the flu jabs on certain dates between certain hours. I have no idea if this is common and I have no idea if everybody is covered or just the 'at risk' groups as I've never had one and my OH is diabetic so would qualify in any case even if he didn't get it from the company.

Re: Flu shots?

I took my child to a pediatrician here who stated he does not feel the flu shot is necessary. I made a personal appointment with a dr here who told me it was too soon (went last month) to consider but she didn't feel it necessary either. Though, I feel like had I pushed for one the drs would have administered, begrudgingly. So, in my experience you can make a doctors appointment and state that you must have one and you should get it.

Re: Flu shots?

My employer (ETH) also offers the flu shot every year, so you can check to see if your employer does this. In case not, there is a national flu day in which participating doctors offer low cost, no appointment shots. Info here:
http://www.vaccinateagainsttheflu.ch...ftag-2013.html

The dates are later here, but that is because the flu originates in asia and then travels west to east, so we have more time between vaccine development and flu arrival than in the US.

Re: Flu shots?

Also, at least here in Basel, certain pharmacies offer them during the season for a small fee. Many employers offer them for free to their employees and their families (mine hasn't begun yet, but I expect it will be starting October).

Re: Flu shots?

Many doctors have a day in the end of October or beginning of November when you can go get your shot for a small fee (30.- for mine) and the practice is booked only for that.

Some companies also offer it.

Your basic insurance will pay for it if you're older than 65 or if you have specific health issues (they have a list).

I do it every year, as well as my kids

Doctors vary on their stance on vaccination; it's important to find one whose view reflects yours.

We're a family that believes in the benefits of vaccination, and our paediatrician recommended very strongly that we get our baby immunized against the flu early in the season. We agreed.

She offers the vaccinations in her office, or they're offered free through my company (including family members).

Re: Flu shots?

The new seasons flu shots are available from about October. Each year WHO apparently advises the pharma companies which influenza strains to include in the upcoming seasons flu shots, pharma produces them, undertake clinical trials, then if OK they then have to get approval by the regulatory authorities, hence the new season's flu shots are available from around October time. And thats why you currrently need a new flu jab every year - the influenza strains may change. If you still get the flu after having a flu jab then maybe WHO got it wrong and you have caught a different type of flu to those contained in the vaccination....

Ok so how did it work here if you're pregnant? Can I still get the jab?

Re: Flu shots?

Yes, it's even recommended.

For my son, I did it before I knew I was pregnant (it's supposed to be safe)

Fir my daughter, my OB recommended to wait for week 16 or after for extra security.

According to the flu day link, it is recommended after the first trimester.

Right well I'm well into my 2nd trimester so I'll go to my doctor. Ironically I've come down with a cold and sore throat today. Grrr

Check your local pharmacy, some offer them for free or for a very small fee,

good luck!

I just spoke to my doctor's office in Winterthur and they've started giving them this week. I'm getting mine next Tuesday.

Re: Flu shots?

I am getting mine on 1st November.

Maybe call your usual doctor soon and find out when they are giving the shots.
You have to pay about Fr 25 if you are not in a "risk group".

Re: Flu shots?

I answered my own question....

My GP's office said they'd have it October 6 (Winterthur), but my oncologist (Bern) has it now. Not sure if that's by Kanton or specialty. At any rate, I'm getting mine on Friday.
