How does repeat prescription work?

You get a prescription for a categery B drug, cat B meaning that repeat is allowed..

You want some more, do you just go back to the pharmacy and ask for more?

Re: How does repeat prescription work?

Yes. Usually the pharmacy will make a note of the repeat so you don't need to carry the prescription around with you.

This only applies if you go to the same pharmacy - I don't know if this includes chains.

You can of course go to another pharmacy, but then you need to take the prescription with you.

Most prescription repeats have a time period associated with them, e.g. 3 months, 6 months etc. after which you need to get another prescription from the Dr.

Re: How does repeat prescription work?

I leave my repeat prescription with my local pharmacy. My doctor normally gives me a 12 months prescription and the pharmacist tells me when it's about to run out. I then contact my doctor and she sends me a new one in the post or calls me for a blood test.

r.
I'm not sure about other chains but at Sunstore you can fill out a form which then means you can go and collect your prescription at any Sunstore in Switzerland. It's useful if you go away ( in Switzerland) and forget/ lose your medicines as my OH did.
He keeps a copy of his prescription in his wallet now just in case. ( this is of course useless if the wallet is inside the bag you leave on the train)

If you get desperate then call your insurer. Mine offered to fax a copy of the prescription to a pharmacy in UK when I forgot my meds (in the end I didn't need it as the pharmacy agreed to give me a part box to see me through to the end of the week).

But the repeat is allowed only if the doc writes it on the prescription. If nothing is mentioned you get exactly what's written and nothing more.

Either that or you just stand in the pharmacy far from home, look a bit pathetic and say "I'm on holiday, I left my tablets at home, can I buy some here?"

Worked for me, but I can do a special kind of pathetic when when the occasion demands it...

Being over 6 ft tall and built like the proverbial brick sh*thouse my OH has a pretty hard time looking pathetic.

He does have an MD though so playing the doctor card usually does the trick.

We simply ask OH's family in Portugal to send us what we want. Apparently you can have most prescr. meds OTC over there, if you know who to ask. And it costs a fraction of the price.

Re: How does repeat prescription work?

In addition to what's been said, I've found that pharmacies are often willing to telephone the doctor to confirm an extension of a repeat scrip. Depending on the doc's reply, they've often just sent them a repeat for another year, or sometimes said that I can have a month's supply but must see the doctor for a further extension.

Mine has just run out again after 7 years, and for the first time I haven't done this, given that I was able to get the stuff easily enough for next to nothing[1] in the US or the UK. It's completely free to me, paid by Suva, if I continue going to my doc every year or so, but frankly CBA right now.

[1] Around 15 quid for 2-3 months supply mail-order from the UK, ~$25 for around 4-5 months' worth in a US Walgreens or similar. Not doing much US travelling at the mo, so the latter source is a little dry, but I can easily get a year's worth in a single shop next time I go over.

Just don't get caught importing more than 1 months supply!

Re: How does repeat prescription work?

I think that if it is written it is a repeat prescription, but not listed for how long, it should be for half a year. That was what I was told in my pharmacy last time but maybe there was something specific about it.

Re: How does repeat prescription work?

and yes, I think just saying your name/showing your insurance card is enough for them to see what prescriptions you have with them

Yes, you can definitely go to the same pharmacy or to one of the same chain. I do that all the time.

What I recommend is to also keep a copy of your prescription. Do not give your only copy to the first pharmacy and forget about it.

Then you can go to any other pharmacy and mention that this is a copy, and where the original was submitted. They usually make another copy for their own files, and you are good to go.

Most repeat prescriptions have a duration attached to them too; an expiration date. So check with your doctor and if you still need the same medicine after the prescription is close to expiring, book an appointment for a new repeat prescription from your doctor.

I usually see my doctor for the repeat prescription I am using about once every 3 months, and definitely once every 6 months. The repeat prescriptions he has given me so far have an expiration date at 12 months later, so I always have enough time to renew the prescription and give a copy of the new one in my local pharmacy.

Re: How does repeat prescription work?

I ran out once and the doctor was on holiday, he advised by email to go the pharmacy show them the his email and get them to give me the meds and then go back when I had got the new prescription, it was the same pharmacy that I normally used so they had it on record that I'd had the meds before.

Other wise the doctor just emails me a new prescription, he just creates a pdf and puts a scanned signature in it

Re: How does repeat prescription work?

It depends on the drug, to some extent- but I would not be impressed with a doctor who keeps signing for repeat prescriptions without asking me to come in to check the current status of whatever led to me needing the drug.

For some drugs, the chemist is actually entitled to question the prespription, and ask for independent advice from the relevant authorities (for some sleeping tablets or other psychotics) if they are concerned that the doctor is being over-liberal and not following guidelines (and yes, you would haveto pay the administrative cost too!).
