Ok. I registered....

If I'm a match one of you must come with me to hold my hand!
It won't be me. I'd be on the floor as soon as I saw the blood.

I would like to register but I'm such a wuss when it comes to giving blood and I have really difficult veins which doesn't help ( nurse had five goes before finding a vein to get a sample last time).

I went to donate blood once and then they wouldn't take it because of having lived in the UK so I never got to see if I was up to it. My dad donated for over 40 years and I still have the certificates and pins/medals he received from the blood transfusion service over the years.

I registered on the list last year.

A medical team comes twice a year at Uni where I work to collect blood, and now they also have a team to inform people about stem cells and this list.

I hope I'll be able to save someone one day.

It once took nurses and a doctor ELEVEN attempts to get blood out of me. If it meant I could save someone, I wouldn't mind if it took even more attempts. I hate needles and bruise like crazy but that's all small stuff compared to someone facing the very real risk of dying.

Re: Register to be a blood stem cell donor - by post

Just to update - the new maximum age to register is now 40 and not 55 (which seems to match the new U.K: requirements too). I guess older people have too many health problems which make them unsuitable.

Which brings me on to my question:

Has anyone here, who isn't a registered donor, (because of age) donated stem cells to a sibling in need abroad?

If they have, I'd love to know what and who was involved in the process. I know what is involved in the actual donation process but specifically for Switzerland with regards to who sorted it out (GP or hospital, costs etc).

PM is fine too. Thanks!
