Spital Zollikerberg

Hi, everyone

Does anybody know the person with general health insurance (without any premium or private insurance) can visit the Spital Zollikerberg for delivery the new baby (Geburtshilfe)?

I was told the hospital is a private one.

Most of my colleagues did that in UniSpital Zürich, but we found it's too hard to find a parking place there and they charged us 6 Fr pro hour.....

Thanks in advance.

Re: Spital Zollikerberg

You can, but your insurance will not cover any of your visit. If you have basic cover, your covered choices in Zurich city are Unispital and Triemlispital. Both are excellent. I've gone to Triemli for the births of my two daughters, but I also know many moms who have been happy with Uni.

As an aside, (and not to be mean), parking probably isn't the most important aspect of choosing your birthing hospital.

Thanks a lot for your response!

I suppose my wife has only the basic coverage from CSS Versicherung. What do you mean 'you can, but your insurance will not cover any of your visit.'

For example, for the normal birth operation and stays in a standard room, do you know how much we have to pay additionally?

The reason we prefer this hospital is because it's close to our place, and during the Infosabend their staff were really nice to us.

But if as you suggested about the extra costs, we need to switch a popular one like UniSpital. We are not high-class family, we just need a nice place to welcome our baby. :-)

Re: Spital Zollikerberg

You need to speak to your health insurance to check which doctors/hospitals are covered.

The insurance should also be able to clarify what 'standard' costs are covered, and what sort of bill you can expect. They should also clarify for you what happens if the mother/baby are ill or there are complications with the birth, or surgery is needed.

I am 95% confident that Zollikerberg is a basic hospital, it's not private. You have the option for a private room which you can pay extra. I have had 3 friends give birth there and none of them had private insurance.

I concur that Zollikerberg is a public hospital, but check with your health insurance to confirm they cover it. There is some info here but my German is not brilliant:

Aha, thank you! OK, my wife really like the ambiance from Zollikerberg, we'd better go there and ask about the details in the information desk.

Thanks a lot for your tip!

Re: Spital Zollikerberg

Oops! I guess I was wrong-I thought you needed half-private or private cover but apparently not!

Also, my understanding is that my insurance won't cover any private hospital costs, but this may be specific to mine (hmo model). Sorry for any confusion due to my misinformation!

You are very nice, I have actually gone through that page, but too many jargons for us.....

You are right, I would like to call the insurance and go to the hospital info desk to clarify them.

Thanks again!

Re: Spital Zollikerberg

Always worth asking insurance even before EF!! :-)
I actually gave birth in a private birth house, and my basic insurance picked up the tab for the midwife care (check-ups, the birth itself, bloods etc) but not for any of the wochenbett (hence I only stayed one night). I don't know whether all insurance companies would have done so (I think yes) or whether mine would have done the same is a fancy private hospital as opposed to a much cheaper midwife-led centre (I think not), but anyway since then, birth houses in Kt Zurich are now covered by basic insurance including the wochenbett. So, hzhang, if your wife fancies checking out a different type of birthing ambiance have a look at Delphys Geburtshaus in the city.

Re: Spital Zollikerberg

Has anyone given birth at Spital Zollikerberg in summer? I’m just curious how hot the birth rooms and the public ward rooms are during summer given that there’s no air conditioning or even fans in most places in Switzerland..
