My husband never gets sick. He claims it's because he's Swiss.

My boyfriend is the same and he's Portuguese. Quite nice though as he has no fear coming near me to look after me.

Portuguese hubby is never sick either. Even when we (I and 3 kids) came down with a monstrous stomach bug last December, he managed not to catch it.

Of course him never being sick leads him to believe that his advice on how to get better trumps that of everyone else. He's been telling me I should "be more active" and giving me the old wive's tale about sweating it out when I've got a fever.

Hmmm... Could just be a Portuguese trait! He also eats whatever he wants (quite a lot of pizza) and weighs 62-64kg. If "but because it works for me" is a viable reason for me to follow his advice, I should be doing the same... Sadly eating healthily I don't weigh 62kg (despite hardly eating anything since Wednesday I haven't lost any weight!).

Portuguese men are too macho to get sick and Swiss men are smart enough to stay out of drafts.

You girls are very lucky as Man-flu is the worst most debilitating illness ever!!

What is it with Swiss people and draughts? The Germans are the same. There seems to be some kind of national paranoia about the slightest movement of air. Is this some allemanic old wives' tale? As far as I know, there isn't a shred of medical evidence for the idea that being in a draught can make you ill.

Well, in Western medicine no. In traditional Chinese medicine, wind can indeed cause internal wind...

No, better immune system.

I get everything while my husband is never sick.

Turks are the same. And the barefoot thing too. If you are barefoot in the house, you'll get sick. For a woman, it means more painful cramps when she'll get her period.

OK, so not only we definitely share the same OH, but you're my twin too!!!

OH grew up in a farm, with non-potable water from the well and no central heating. Apparently it boosted up his immune system no end, while me, poor overprotected city girl, catches every bug around.

Re: Influenza has arrived

I wasn't over-protected, I was normal. I wonder if having had to take large quantities of antibiotics has permanently damaged my immune system. The last batch I took was about to 18 months ago. Does anyone know if that would cause a permanent change in my opinion immune system's abilities?

Well I'm Romanian and back home everyone gets hysteric about the slightest movement of air. Even when there were above 30 degrees Celsius in the summer my mother was shouting at me to close those darn windows because we'll catch a cold... Most of the older people also believe they suffer from rheumatism...(those draughts, you didn't dress well when it was cold outside etc etc etc)

And nothing, you asked what was wrong with them and I just wanted to say that the Swiss and the Germans are not the only ones inclined to believe in this kind of "mythology". In fact I was surprised at how many people from different countries seem to get paranoid about draughts.

Re: Influenza has arrived

and...? Scottish highlanders and Eskimos are reasonable healthy (Discounting alcoholic related problems), despite the continuous cold winds. Draft exposure causing illness is total rubbish. If it were true, why do African people become ill?

I read recently that some people have a virus in their gut, which attacks the bad "germs" and these people are healthier, maybe there is some truth in this?

Now with the latest 'flu, what are the symptoms? Is it vomiting and diarrhea, or is this a separate disease outbreak in the Solothurn to Neuchâtel areas?

If you are worried about antibiotics in your gut, you can buy pro-biotics at the pharmacy, they cost about Fr 15 for the course.

Of course it is, these are superstitions passed on (as ol' good health advice) from generation to generation.

They're especially annoying when the weather is rather hot and it could get quite warm inside.
