Re: Influenza has arrived

Not surprised. The number of staff we have had off sick this week, and the amount of coughs, colds and runny noses, it's definitely peak cold 'n' flu season.

Re: Influenza has arrived

The word influenza is much abused possibly. But I've picked up a massively stinking cold in the UK 10 days ago and can't shift it- no sleep, a head like a football and coughing so much it makes me sick (+sitting up in bed to try and lessen coughing and no sleep) YUK

Mind you, could be worse- read yesterday that bubonic plague is back with a vengeance in Madagascar and unless steps are taken, on its way to the rest of the world.

I always joke that between them my kids caught every possible bug except bubonic plague, I'll have to refrain from now on!

Kiddies and I all got the flu shot, hope it'll work!

I doubt it's the flu, but I got a stinky cold. My sore throat keeps me awake at night and I'm starting to cough.

I could be dying.

I expect a lot of sympathy, since you can't make me tea

Re bubonic plague. The World Health Organisation, British Red Cross, other charities and Gvt agencies are urged to deal seriously with the problem before it moves out of isolated villages, into towns and then cross out of the country. With so many bugs now resistant to antibiotics, it could be an absolute disaster:

12 December 2013 Last updated at 16:36 GMT
At least 20 people in one village in Madagascar have died in an outbreak of the bubonic plague.
The International Committee of the Red Cross first issued warnings in October that the island was at risk of an epidemic of the disease, which is spread by fleas and rats.
Gaelle Borgia, a freelance journalist in Madagascar, told BBC Radio 5 live's Up All Night: "They go and see witch doctors... and they think they can cure the disease."
"They need to go to medical centres and be tested with a rapid diagnostic test but some people in isolated regions are... illiterate so they don't know they are infected."

I stayed at home fit and healthy most of this week, to avoid the stupid coughy ill people who sit in the office all day pretending that they're not sickly.

Re: Influenza has arrived

I've already had a three-day winter cold, so should be alright, now, until my summer one.
Hopefully, cycling to and from work, 7/7, and walking the dogs for an hour a day, in dark dank woods, helps the overall body strength and general immunity.

This is the problem - a lot of people feel like they can't take the time off. I suddenly started feeling ill on Wednesday morning (aching all over, sneezing, faint) but stayed all day so I could finish all the urgent stuff I had to do so that I could then be off ill. Nothing to do with my employer - even my boss told me I should go home but I knew I wouldn't be able to relax leaving a mess behind (we manage occupational pension funds and January is really not the time to be sick as it is right in the middle of the yearly closings). I took the day off on Thursday thinking oooo I can go back on Friday. Yesterday I realised I didn't have a cold, I definitely have the flu (I have had enough colds to know the difference, plus I had the flu about 5 years ago) and am now worried I won't be able to go back on Monday. However, as long as I have symptoms, I am contagious. It's bad enough the one person has to stay at home without said person infecting everyone else (plus I wouldn't wish this on anyone!). I could very well have got sick from one of those colleagues who just has to come in to work even though they're ill. I can understand feeling like you can't take the time off but it really is better for everyone.

Re: Influenza has arrived

I had whatever Kamarate had about two weeks ago. My little one had something different. He couldn't keep food down but he was all better by the next day. I am still recovering. Yesterday 3 out of 20 kids in my other son's class were out sick.
My husband never gets sick. He claims it's because he's Swiss.

I had a little bird, it's name was Enza, I opened a window and In flew Enza.

A little rhyme from the 1918 pandemic.
