timeline for getting married?

Hey all,

I'm an EU citizen planning to marry my Swiss boyfriend this Summer. How long should we expect the entire process to take? Getting a hold of my documents and having them translated shouldn't take too long; I'm more thinking of the process from filing the application for the marriage certificate or whatever its called to actually getting married.

Just curious in hearing how long it took others in a similar situation. We live in Canton Bern, I have a student B permit that expired end of August. We also aren't too picky about a specific date or weekday.

cheers!

What permit are you on right now? I only ask because you say your student permit expired in August, and I hope you have a new one otherwise you might run into problems when filling out your marriage paperwork.

I'm on a student B permit, I'll be finishing a MA degree from Uni Bern. Don't have a permit lined up after this… But if we're getting married then how can this be a problem?

Re: timeline for getting married?

Ooh, you mean your permit expireS in August, not that it has already expireD. Big difference! In that case, you should not run into any big problems with the paperwork.

I seem to recall from other stories here that it took about 4-6 weeks for the marriage paperwork approval. After that (or maybe at the same time) I believe you'll want to apply for a family reunification permit to stay here with your new Swiss husband. The authorities in Bern will be your best source for information on requirements and timelines.

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage.

Re: timeline for getting married?

I'm in Vaud, so it might be different here, but we're getting married mid-May. We sent the papers mid-March, and got a convocation for beginning of April to deal with all the paperwork. All fine for May.
