Free skin cancer examinations May 12th to 16th

I saw an article in 20 Minutes this morning saying that there would be free skin cancer checkups throughout Switzerland next week to raise awareness of the disease.

If I'm understanding the website correctly, you can have one suspect mole etc. examined for free.

The website, which includes more information and details of where these checkups are being offered and how to register, is: www.melanoma.ch

I ought to add that the moles that most people think could be cancerous, probably aren't, and the little black one you didn't notice could well be.

i.e. getting one mole checked seems a bit pointless. I think this is probably more of a way for people to get advised to book a complete check-up (which isn't a bad thing at all).

I had one cut out of my back, years ago - it was quite innocuous compared to other bigger, browner ones.

I wonder i you get filmed ... A bit like embarrassing bodies UK TV show.

Anyways, great idea, thanks for posting.

One should be aware of one's body, especially changes. Would likely be very cheap to be checked and covered by any insurance, get it done!

You need to come this morning then, it might be your only chance to see it here.

Re: Free skin cancer examinations May 12th to 16th

i got checked last year, don't underestimate skin cancer its insidious, bcs you can have one on the back of your neck or back and not see it, a female family friend had to fight of cancer for years because of just this.

frank skinner the comedian, once told a story about how he had a one night stand with a nurse who saw the mole on his back and advised him to get it checked, it turned out she saved his life as it was cancer...

If you are a woman and don't want a male doctor checking over ever inch of your body with a magnifying glass.. this lady doctor/dermatologist (Dr. med. Barbra Fischer)in zurich is very thorough.

she also speaks english, spanish, italian, french and german

Hopefully not like the UK.

On a more serious note a friend of mine's son in the UK recently died of skin cancer which was hidden in his hair and not discovered until it was too late. He was in his 30s...

Thanks for the info! I was foolishly a sun-worshipper (in terms of tanning!) in my teens and early twenties. I'm now booked in for next week.

Re: Free skin cancer examinations May 12th to 16th

thanks so much for the info!! My brother in Munich had a large mole removed from his back last week, he is waiting for the results.

We are a "moley" family, and i have noticed a few changes in a couple of mine, so shall definately go to the place in Geneva next week.

It's not often you are offered something free in this county.

Re: Free skin cancer examinations May 12th to 16th

I have red hair and fair skin, some years ago I had a malignant melanoma removed from my thigh, which thankfully hadn't spread. All because I tried to get a tan like my dark haired brown eyed friend! We used to sunbathe in her garden when England seemed to have much hotter summers than now!
I have become much more sensible with age and have learned to accept my pale skin, and keep a close eye on moles and freckles.
Hope your brother is ok Patsycat.

Same here- neighbour and I used to sunbathe in back garden all day long- we had craters in the lawn about an inch wide.

Re: Free skin cancer examinations May 12th to 16th

I got sunburnt in Edinburgh last Summer. I peeled when i came home. No one believed me when i told them that it was Scotland and not some exotic destination where i had got my tan.

I blame it on my mum wiping the dust off her 15 year old sun cream!! This year I'll take my own.

Thanks!!! Called and registered for Triemlispital in ZH. Was offered a couple of time slots, i guess there is still a possibility to go.
I was told it is 10 minutes and completely free (hope so! i don't have my health insurance organised yet). I have a lot of moles, i mean,A LOT. Looking forward for a free thing in CH but scared!

Will it be full body check or you just show the beauty spots that you feel need looking at?
