Can anyone recommend a dietician for IBS in Zurich? I read certain diets can be helpful. When I search a dietician though, almost all results are only for weightloss. Thanks!

You could ask your Hausarzt for a recommendation? Did you visit a doctor for a diagnosis?

Again, see your GP in the first instance. Do not self-diagnose IBS because as discussed upthread, the symptoms could point to so many other conditions.

And again as discussed upthread, do not accept an IBS diagnosis from a GP in the first instance, until other conditions have been tested for and ruled out. It needs repeated a million times: IBS is an exclusion diagnosis. Push for a full work up, or better a referral to a gastroenterolgist, if the GP tries to dismiss symptoms off the bat as IBS.

Again based on my experience and the experiences of several friends, some GPs here in Switzerland seems to go for an 'easy' IBS diagnosis first without testing, ignoring the possibility of cancers and other conditions. Sadly, to many patients' cost.

---

If you have ruled out other conditions and finally come to an IBS diagnosis, ask your GP to refer you to a dietician. With a referral (most of) the cost is covered under basic insurance.

Without a GP referral you are likely liable for the full costs.

Nutritionists often advertise weight loss consultations because that's what self-referral clients tend to look for. Other dietary advice is often not advertised because it requires a doctor diagnosing the condition in order for them to work with you.

Try to work with a dietician associated with a medical practice or hospital.

I can give you the name of someone in SZ, but that might be too far away for you.

I had the same "Koloskopie fear".

I decided to go for it as it's the only option to find out what's going on.

It was really nothing. I had to sleep for half an hour.

I can recommend the doctor in Winterthur , a fantastic one who can speak fluent english.

Thanks for the suggestions
I was diagnosed by my doctor with IBS. He told me I could go to any registered dietician. He did not have a specific recommendation. That is why I am looking.

If your doctor hasn't recommended a specific nutritionist, perhaps your best bet would to try to see someone practicing at one of the hospital outpatient clinics.

I recommend this because there are some quacks out there, and if you don't have sufficient backgrount in nutrition itself, let alone IBS and diet issues (which of course is why you need a nutritionist in the first place) it can be difficult to spot the quacks.

Chances are that someone associated with a hospital will not only be qualified in nutrition but also will be able to address your condition. And help you find additional resources if needed.

I'd likely start with one of the clinics at the Unispital.

Did your doctor give you a referral letter? Without this you might not be able to get an appointment. If you have trouble getting in, have your GP send a referral letter. And remember, without a GP referral basic insurance may not cover the cost.

I have seen the nutritionist at Spital Einsiedeln, by the way, in conjunction with trying the FODMAP diet to try to resolve some of my problems. This diet is often recommended for IBS suffers as well. She was fairly helpful, might be a possibility for you as she deals with IBS a lot. (But honestly, I got more out of Dr Sue Shepard's books, the nutritionist who developed the diet. Nonetheless, the diet should only be done with advice from a qualified nutritionist.

If you are on the bottom end of the left coast, that might be a possibility, but likely too far if you are elsewhere in ZH. Hence the suggestion to start with the UniZH outpatient clinic.

Do you speak German well enough to participate in a consultation?

And just a reminder:if your symptoms do not improve after a reasonable time under a nutritionist's care, and if your GP has not done all the tests needed to rule out other possibilities, push for further exploration or see a gastroenterologist. I cannot stress this enough. I harp on this point because too many people have been sloughed off with an IBS diagnosis, ignoring a far more serious disease, losing valuable treatment time.

I too cannot stress this enough and agree 100% with meloncollie.

After being fobbed off by my doctor since March 2015, I recently insisted and fought for a detailed blood test in September which showed I have severe anaemia, and have had for all that time. I very quickly changed Doctor and, thankfully, my new Doc is very keen to find the cause as she feels it is related to my celiac disease, or other food allergy/crohns/ digestive problem etc. so she quickly referred me on to a specialist.

Today I had a very quick and easy colonoscopy and gastroscopy done by a wonderful with-it and on-the-ball Gastroenterologist. All immediate signs are good, nothing nasty, but they're now going find out from the biopsies what is going on.

I am lying here at home in bed still feeling happily high from all that sedation.. Mr. Swisstree is cooking for me: lots of fab food to go with steak, I am starving.. and kids are quiet

So please do not get fobbed off - get referred and keep pushing for answers.
