According to my GP there is an IBS clinic at the Zürich Unispital. You will need a referral from your GP, so that would be the first place to start.

I'm afraid that I don't know much more about the clinic, as it turned out that my problem was something else - but my GP spoke highly of them.

A private gastroenterologist in Thalwil:
PD Dr. med Jean-Pierre Gutzwiller
http://www.magendarm-thalwil.ch

By referral only (so see your GP in the first instance), possibly a long wait for an appointment.

Hope you find someone to help you.

Just an FYI - people with IBS should look at the possibility that you might actually have Carcinoid Cancer. It is often misdiagnosed as IBS (which basically is the cover for any digestive issues that can't be linked to something specific.)

If you want more info, a good source of info is www.carcinoid.org.

Feel free to also PM me.

Very good point, Bearbadger.

Many conditions, some serious, are often misdiagnosed as IBS.

I certainly do not wish to be alarmist, but my criticism of treatment here is that critical time can be wasted pursuing the IBS route. Because IBS can have an emotional component it's the 'easy' explanation when the patient's symptoms do not improve - there seems to be a reluctance to investigate further.

If you continue to have trouble, it might be necessary to push your doctor harder than you are used to having to do to get him/her to take further action.

Wishing you all the best, Elenoire.

GP is the British term (General practitioner) for a family physician/doctor- not a specialist.

You're so lucky, I'd love a colonoscopy , I think its wise to get checked. If the doctor is offering it id take it, i'm too embarrassed to ask, you know at the doctors office,
me - 'id like a colonoscopy',
doctor - 'anything wrong?',
me - 'no'

In the meantime, maybe try sheeps milk and sheep milk yogurt. I found it very soothing and digestible, its different from cows milk. There is some info on it at sheep101.

can be found at migros and coop.

After the corn pop cereal incident, the doctor prescribed a natural remedy, (concentrated peppermint oil capsules) totally slowed and calmed everything down, maybe they offer the same thing here?

Re: looking for a doctor for suspected IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) ZH - ZG

You might not want to hear this, but IBS is a 'last diagnosis' and should not be given as a diagnosis until all other things have been tested and ruled out.

You should see a gastro-enterologist. And whilst I can understand having a fear of a colonoscopy, there are much worse things in life...like bowel cancer.

My best friend has a genetic form of bowel cancer. She had 95 percent of her large intestine removed at 18 year old, to prevent her from dying a slow and extremely painful young death. If she had not had the surgery she would have been dead by 30. She watched two uncles, and her mother die of the same condition....her mother died at 55 as the oldest survivor of the condition.

Please please please see your doctor, get a referral to a gastroenterologist,ap and get it checked out. If you are freaked out by the idea of a colonoscopy, tell your doctor and ask for a referral to a therapist...

It could be something really simple, or something really serious, but you are not going to know until you get it properly checked out...

If you are a smoker....stop smoking...

yes, not to scaremonger or anything

'Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK (2010)'

people don't talk about symptoms to family and friends and are a bit embarrassed to even speak to a doctor about poop (with two dogs, i like to think i'm a bit of expert on poop, i even recognise different dogs' poops ), so it can go undiagnosed. anyway don't be afraid of a colonoscopy, i personally think one every 25 years should be mandatory

Re: looking for a doctor for suspected IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) ZH - ZG

I am afraid of such exam, but I'll go back and talk to my doctor...

I believe that my problems start with food...also I have seen that avoiding some food the situation improves...but it's not really a life and it affects my social life.... if you can't eat 65% of what normal people eat.
Anyway...I do not eat any kind of dairy as I am very alergic to animal milk even lactose free products, also I have to be carefull as milk powder is everywhere....
I eliminated glutine but I think the problem it's not the glutine itself but the yeast probably, I don't have any kind of problem with pasta.
I don't eat junky food I don't smock and I barely drink...
Even so I react with sugar and alcohol and coffee...and nuts if I eat too many... so at the end I don't really know what to eat that is why I need a doctor do guide me.
I have already done some blood and pooh test the only thing that came out is that my intestin is inflamate...

thank you all!

So true...

Unfortunately, in my experience and in the experience of several friends and acquaintances there seems to be a tendency among GPs here to go for the IBS diagnosis first, without making any attempt to rule out other conditions. As above, critical time is too often wasted chasing the IBS red herring.

If you are experiencing IBS like symptoms you will likely need to take charge of your diagnosis process to a greater degree than you might be comfortable doing.

Research the conditions that present similar symptoms. Be blunt. Ask your doctor to explain why he does not want to test for those. If you are not satisfied, and especially if your symptoms are not improving, see another doctor. If necessary, see a doctor in your home country.

Again, wishing you all the best.

If you feel more comfortable talking to a woman doctor, you can call your insurance company and ask them, they have a list and can give you a name (that was my experience anyway)

Re: looking for a doctor for suspected IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) ZH - ZG

Clinic at Unispital ZH:

http://www.gastroenterologie.usz.ch/...en/seite2.aspx

I have not been there, just had the info on hand from back when IBD/IBS was a possibility being looked into. So not a personal recommendation, rather just info.

Now... I don't know if you can get an appointment yourself, you may need a referral from your GP.

Which means that you might have to go through all the fol-de-rol of getting a GP to take your concerns seriously.

So... as a first step try to call the clinic, see what happens. It might help to have a German speaking friend call for you to make the appointment. If a GP referral is required, then push your GP for that.

I hear over and over that 'all doctors at the Unispital speak English' but that has not been my experience. So be very frank about your need for a doctor who is willing to consult in English.

You linked to a page which says "Sprechstunde". Implication - they are open for business.

The simplest approach is to send an email in very, very simple English language to gastroenterologie@usz.ch and ... ask. (Swiss health insurance card will be the first thing they will ask for when it comes to an appointment, by the way.)

IBS sufferer reporting. I'd kindly ask for recommendations of IBS-specialized clinics or specialists in area Zurich/Aargau. I can only speak English.
Went for a colonoscopy around the Seefeld area in Zurich. English was no problem.

The test is really not a big deal ;-).

Depending on your insurance, you'll probably need a referral by your GP.
PM me if you'd like the practice address.

My docs at the Sante Med in Basel speak English. I have SWICA and they refer me to English speaking doctors because I ask. I don't think it's a huge problem to find them.

What I thought was gall stones seems to be an ulcer...still trying to piece it together. The initial stool and blood tests came up clear as well as a sonogram. I've been taking pantoprazole for 3 weeks, although it didnt take effect until 14 days or so. I've also cut out all the Swiss, Italian, and French cheese and traded dairy for soy milk. That may have helped too.

The next step is a food allergy test and, if negative, they'll scope my stomach and possibly intestines.

I do have enough recurring pain and SWICA gave me the names of GIs that I could contact directly. So I didn't need the GP. However, could just be my insurance. Had to cancel the appt in order to go back to the states this week for a funeral. So, I'm back to the original track with the GP.

Anyway, good luck managing it and I am interested to hear your story or anyone else's suffering from this. Seems to be alot of issues with the similar symptom of abdominal pain. Just annoying and a bit frightening at times to have all the soreness day after day.
