Optometrist in Bern

Hey everyone,

So this is my first post, but I've been reading this for a while. Hopefully someone can help me out.

I'm looking for an optometrist that speaks English in Bern. I want to switch over to contact lenses and I need to get prescription for that. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also how much would it cost? (I've noticed that for some things it's cheaper for me to go to do it in another country as I travel frequently.)

Thanks for the help.

Thank you, very helpful. If you happen to find the price I would appreciate it too as It might be a deciding factor, otherwise I can ask them too.

I can't find their prices on the site, other than at the very bottom of page for contact lenses where it says a person can have a 2 yr contract, and then there is a 199sfr leaving fee. They get you coming and going.

I have never purchased contact lenses in CH, keep my prescription up-to-date and order online in UK or Sweden, so can't offer any advice there, but for the sake of comparison: a contact lens fitting in UK is 50-60, and a silicon hydrogel daily lens (Acuvue Trueye) roughly 60 for a 3 month supply/per eye = 120 or 480/yr. It is definitely possible to get less expensive lenses, including monthly, bi-monthly, etc. I have a very strong prescription and after a bad experience with cheaper lenses have found these work best for me.

If you don't wear lenses all the time, alternating with regular glasses, you can cut the cost as well. I use Lenstore.co.uk

Re: Optometrist in Bern

Hey all,

Just wanted to post the reply I got from the eyeness people about the pricing in case anyone in the future is looking into it.

"For getting started with contact lenses we will reserve 90min for you. We will ensure that contact lenses are the best and healthiest option for you. Our price philosophy deivides material from service we provide. Price depends highly on which demands you will have, the price for our 4 optometrists is CHF 218.- per hour. Price for contact lenses and care solutions are weekly updated and are compared to swiss internet prices. If you depend on a low budget, we provide a special "all inclusive" Abonnement for Students which include your contact lenses, solution and 6 monthly health checks. This Abonnements starts from 29.50 per Month and will last for at least 2 years. To get started, there is a starting fee of only CHF 159.-"

Depending on one's optical needs I would say this is a good example of being "Switzerlanded" particularly if you travel regularly and can get fitted elsewhere. They don't mention the leaving fee of 199sfr when one ends the abo...

Re: Optometrist in Bern

I was never told about this abo! The first consultation was indeed 90 mins and very thorough (measuring also eye pressure etc) the subsequent consultations are about half an hour. Now, since a few years have passed since my first consultation, i will have another thorough one next time

My eyes is one thing I dont mind having to pay more (it' switzerland, after all) especially since i found out that the fitting of the contact lences i had in my country was not done correctly

Anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand Francs, depending on what you want and need. The best way is to go to the standard shops (Fielmann is supposed to be good but not too pricey) and do your homework.

Look at frames you like and see how much they cost. Do you know what type of lenses you want? Plain plastic, polycarb, anti-glare coating, anti-scratch coating, bifocal, etc.? It can vary quite a bit, depending on all of these. Sorry, it's pretty difficult to give you anything more accurate with such a generic question.
