Preliminary reports are that he is a CDC supervisor. Really? Wow.

So you have a nurse with a fever that travels on a plane, a doctor that is supposed to be in quarantine going for take-out, and a CDC official not wearing any protective gear. Yeah, that really instills my confidence in the system.

Well, maybe. But if you're the CDC and you're trying to calm fears and make it look like you know what you're doing...probably best to suit up anyway, no?

Under-trained and under-equipped in 1st world hospitals. OK...
It is worse than I thought.
If the third world had the same infection rate for Health care workers as in Dallas there would not be any left working?

Another report just says one passenger was quarantined, and other passengers were allowed to leave. Plane is still grounded for disinfecting:

Hospital in Connecticut have just said they are evaluating a patient with Ebola like symptoms…. either this is getting out of hand fast or people are being super cautious!

""Initial indications are that it’s not a case of Ebola," an Air France spokesperson told The Local. "We understand the passenger did not have a temperature."

Re: Recent Ebola outbreak

SE London, ridiculous situation in a major hospital.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-visitors.html

Panic at London hospital after suspected Ebola patient arrives at A&E: Medical staff 'scared to go near man but let him use a communal toilet and have visitors'
  • Source claims Lewisham hospital response to case was 'farcical'
  • Man was admitted despite plans to send Ebola patients to specialist centre
  • One ward reportedly refused to have him and medics 'reluctant' to treat him
  • Came on same day as high-profile NHS drill in how to respond to outbreak
  • Insider says staff only have aprons, masks and gloves - not bio suits
  • Feverish patient later found not to have deadly Ebola virus

Re: Recent Ebola outbreak

The whole thing is blown out of proportion. Okay, it is a horrific death with blood gushing out of eyes and ears, or something like that. That may or may not be an exaggeration, but the reaction is exaggerated.

I think the CDC, WHO, UN, US Military, and any such response teams are also using this opportunity to exercise their response readiness. When such things happens, as it has happened with the flu, it is showtime for these folks. They take center stage and play up their importance. Nevermind whether the threat is real or not. That is what we pay them for.

I have watched a documentary about treating Ebola in one of the affected countries. Many of them were nurses and doctors from MSF( Medecins sans frontieres) and, along with the local staff, they take all the hygiene&protection norms very seriously.
It is a tragedy what Ebola leaves behind...very, very sad.

I just hate the usage of word "exponentially" by media. Neither it served any good when describing investments growth prior recession in 2007, nor it will do any good in terms of plague's spread in 2014.

Re: Recent Ebola outbreak

Genuine question. Why is there such a panic about "Clipboard Man"? Do people actually realise how the disease is spread? It is not airborn in the classic way. It requires contact with bodily fluids in the same way HIV does.

The risk to health workers is due to the fact that end stage Ebola patients have huge amounts of bodily fluids spewing everywhere. The nurse in the pictures is still quite early stage and clipboard guy has no direct contact with her and thus no chance of being contaminated. The people who have direct contact and a risk of contacting any bodily fluids are suited up.

A whole lot of panic over nothing.

Re: Recent Ebola outbreak

Countries are apparently not donating to the UN's ebola trust fund. Kofi Annan seems to think it's because the victims are black.

Ebola crisis: UN launches urgent appeal for donations

Quote:
Ban Ki-moon has launched another urgent appeal for funds to help fight Ebola after a United Nations drive for donations fell short of its target.

The UN chief said a $1bn trust fund he launched in September has received just $100,000 (£62,000) so far. ...

Of those countries that have pledged money to the trust fund, only Colombia has paid, giving $100,000 (£62,000). ...

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has told the BBC he was "bitterly disappointed" with the international community's response.

"If the crisis had hit some other region it probably would have been handled very differently," he said in an interview with BBC Newsnight.

"In fact when you look at the evolution of the crisis, the international community really woke up when the disease got to America and Europe."
