Re: anyone on this thread suffer from Constipation problblems

Dark beer in the evening and coffee at breakfast does it for me.

Yeah, yeah - don't forget your All Bran and fresh fruit and veg. - raw or partially (not over-) cooked.
I also try to eat onion everyday - for several health benefits.

PS - I'm not a sufferer because of the above.

PPS - if all else fails, get some of Tom's syrup - if he made any in the end.

Whole grain oatmeal and dried prunes (mixed with milk or yoghurt) as a daily breakfast will take care of your problems.

Re: anyone on this thread suffer from Constipation problblems

Garlic clove (this works wonders for me), dried plums or plum juice, or warm milk and plums (30mins in a cup), dries figs or better fresh figs (it depends of course where you live and can find them), apple - - all these in the evening, but not straight before going to bed. Aloe ferox capsules- have been taking for few days now and they are great. From time to time, senna tea, but I don't know if your body will get used to this tea so this is why from time to time. Clay also works for me.
In the morning- water with lemon or just warm water.

For me, cereals , like the ones that people eat for breakfast , don't do the trick and in fact my stomach can't ''process'' cereals anyway. For example oatmeal prridge (which I hate by the way) never worked for me. Also fibre supplements or something like psyllium husks didn't work. By the way, you need to drink a lot of water otherwise...you get constipated.

And of course, drink water, eat more fruits and veggies, soups, the whole la di da, we all know the whole story but for example for me even these changes don't make a ...dent in my stomach...sometimes so I have to take dried plums which always work. Also sometimes, I put some dried plums in a cup with warm water and make it as a plum juice as it is easier for me to drink it.

Or it could also be Helicobacter Pylori which I had and it was quite terrible for me (I'll spare you of the details) and had to take antibiotics for 10 days. I felt much much better after that, still not perfect, but much better than before. So maybe it is a good idea to check the stomach also.

If you say she already tried different pills and nothing worked, then first thing to do is to see a doctor. Constipation isn't caused only by low fiber intake, better to make sure it isn't a health problem, specially that you say it has been like that for long time.

Otherwise, first line of defense is enough fiber every day, not all breakfast cereals have the same fiber content, so aim for one which has high whole wheat (there is one in Migros which is 95% whole wheat). Plus as much as she can of other fiber sources, fruits veg...etc

Second line in case she really doesn't like any of them above, then natural fiber pills/sachets (you could also find in Migros).

Last resort would be pills, such as Dulcolax. Although it is not good to be on chemical laxatives for long time. Better try with fiber intake

Your cousin should go to a dietary expert. Trying various pills and liquids is like fire fighting, she needs to prevent the fire itself.

It might be her diet, it might be her pharmaceuticals, it might be lack of exercise, it might be a lack of water. She needs to get some good advice and her doctor would be the best place to start asking.

It really depends on the cause. In most cases it's due to dietary factors, and the solution is simple (if not always easy) - eat less fat and more fibre, i.e. less meat and more veg, less pastry and more fruit. Etc. As i say, not always easy, but it's never going to be a simple case of 'take this pill', but more drastic lifestyle changes are often needed to enable a different diet, like preparing a lunch to take to the office instead of popping out for a sandwich, or ensuring you make time for proper meals rather than snacking on unhealthy things all day. (Just some examples).

If there's a medical condition then that needs to be addressed first. Fibre supplements ('Fybogel' is a common one) are often prescribed either as a short-term solution where dietary change is needed but will take some time, or if there's a condition that can't be treated but may respond to extra fibre. Also if the cause is actually drugs being taken for another condition. Opiods are particularly noted for this, but in general anyone being prescribed them will be made aware of such adverse reactions.

But as is ever the case, while EF is good at many things, going to see a doctor is usually much more likely to be effective

Try a spot of light exercise. Go for a brisk walk or do 25 to 75 crunches.
Stretch. Don't over do it, because exercising too much elicits your fight or response and shuts down your digestive system temporarily.

Re: anyone on this thread suffer from Constipation problblems

Never actually had constipation. However I often go at least a week without defecation. I just don't need to go.
I seem to have some strange ability to absorb my entire meal. Even if i eat fresh veg, fruit, vindaloo, guiness, prunes.. Nope, just don't need for days, a week even. No food makes me go daily.

I once went nearly 2 weeks and thought i really should do something, went to a pharma and they gave me a tablet, said it would work in a couple of hours.. Jeeeezus, I was walking along the Strand in London when it took effect, i suddenly doubled over, crossed legs, stood still until the mighty contraction stopped.. I then walked (from the knees down) and made it to Charring Cross station, threw open the stall door and produced a tsunami of poo. It felt great!

I have only had a constation once, and that was after surgery and was dehydrated.
She needs to drink plenty of water, and of course eat fresh fruit and veg regularly.

Re: anyone on this thread suffer from Constipation problems

I'm on long-term medication that causes constipation as a side-effect. A nasty bout is appallingly debilitating and makes you feel generally unwell, so your friend has my sympathy.

Muesli and coffee for breakfast works for me most of the time, along with drinking plenty of fluids during the day, and gentle exercise that involves bending at the waist - gardening for example. Also avoid tight waistbands on clothing.

Once constipation has started, though, the above advice won't really help as the lower colon is already blocked. As a first step, use gelatine suppositories at home. These are very effective, but your friend may need to use them for a few days to shift all the hardened poo. If the colon is impacted, however, an enema may be required and s/he should get medical attention.

As others have said, if a change of diet doesn't help and s/he's not on medication, it would be a good idea to consult a GP.

Re: anyone on this thread suffer from Constipation problblems

To relieve the immediate problem, an enema works far better (and quicker) than laxative treatments (and is much less painful). Then as others have said, if it's a long term issue see a doctor.

Try not to eat too much meat is a general rule of thumb. Meat is the best way to block you up and make you constipated all the time. For some people this might include fish as canned Tuna is known to contribute to constipation.
