Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

Hi,

I have recently come Zurich from India and intending to be here for round 2 years. I shall be bringing my 4 months baby from India here soon. Could someone guide me on following points?

1. What are the vaccination plans in Switzerland? Where can we get future vaccination done for the baby. Are there any special facilities for vaccination?
2. In case of medical assistance, could you please recommend good Pediatrician Zurich? (I am located in Oerlikon, so preferably nearby areas would be helpful)
3. I have been reading that getting an appointment of doctor is tricky here. The waiting period seems to be long. Could you shed some light on this as well?

Sorry, my queries might sound trivial, but I am confused

Request members those went through similar conditions to share their experiences.

Thank you.

Regards,
Ullhas

Re: Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

1) At the paediatrician (Kinderarzt)

2) Ask your paediatrician - they will give you a booklet with the ages that particular vaccinations are given.

3) I have never had this experience. Whenever I've phoned ours I have had an appointment either the same day or (rarely) the following day. I know they also squeeze people in straight-away if it is something more urgent. Perhaps we are just lucky with ours.

My advice would be to find a paediatrician very near where you live. Trust me you will probably be there a lot, and when your baby is ill you do not want to be trekking half-way across the city in the middle of a cold winter. Perhaps someone that lives in Oerlikon could recommend one?

Re: Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

As mentioned before all the vaccinations are made at the pedriatician's who also provides with a list/booklets of mandatory vaccinations in Switzerland.
However, if any other vaccinations are required in your country, they will be willing to imply them. You may just pay for them on your own. Only mandatory vaccinations are covered by the insurance, for example a vaccination against rotavirus which is obligatory in other countries, is not covered by insurance and you have to pay for it extra.

You can find a list of pedtriaticians in your neighbourhood either in your GZ (Geminde Centrum) or at a very useful institution called Mother and Father Advisory (Mutter and Vaterberatung).
We got a list of doctors in Zurich at the hospital when our daughter was born. Unfortunately we threw it away.
But yes, it is really reasonable to find a doctor for your baby close to where you live. Just google "Kinderartz Altstetten" and you will get some results. Or try at www.doktor.ch . Then try to call them and check if the doctor speaks English (the majority do but it's always better to ask).

I also didn't have a problem to become a patient of our doctor's. I just called the office and told that I had a newborn and I needed a doctor for my baby and done.
Also now, whenever I need to see the doctor I call the office and fix the appointment on the same day.

If anything else, feel free to ask.

Re: Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

There are no mandatory vaccinations in CH. They have a recommended schedule, but none are mandatory.

Re: Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

Hi,

Thanks everyone for the pointers and useful info shared. We are now quite well settled and are very comfortable with baby. :-)
We found a nice pediatrician nearby our place and our visits have been fairly comfortable and informative.
Regarding vaccination, my pediatrician offered me both options 1. as per my native country India 2. As per Swiss schedule.
Since there is not much difference in schedule, we went for option 2.
It has been 5 months and 3 visits. Baby is doing great and we are really happy with the service we are getting.

So, my learning: Locate a good English speaking Pediatrician near your place and they shall take care of everything rest.

Regards,
Ullhas

Re: Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

I am following Swiss vaccination schedule and everything is getting covered under insurance. However, when I inquired about extra vaccines (as in if I want to follow Indian Vaccination schedule, I have to go for couple of more vaccines), my Pediatrician suggested that it might not be covered by Insurance and I might have to bear the cost.

Regards,
Ullhas

Re: Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

I have had a couple of extra vaccinations done for both my children since we do travel to Pakistan and I have never been asked to pay myself. But then again it must depend on the type of vaccine.

Re: Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

Yes. I think it all depends on your insurance plan. Some might allow while others might ask you to bear the cost.

Re: Pediatrician and vaccination in Zurich

With regard to vaccination experience, we found that there's a vaccine that's recommended on the US schedule that isn't routinely given here (rotavirus). Since we're moving back soon we inquired about having that done for our baby, but the hassle of special ordering it seemed too great, so we decided to forego it.
