Old age health care costs... how is it funded?

In the UK, if you need continuing health or nursing care in old age, it appears that at some point you have to pay for it yourself (if you have more than £23k in savings) and / or your own home, which the government can sell to fund your care.

Since nursing care homes in the UK can cost £30k to 50k a year, thats a fast drain on most peoples savings to say the least.

How does this work in Switzerland?

As long as you have assets you pay for it. Your Gemeinde will take over only when the cash runs out.

The financing of nursing home care was revised in 2011 with a transfer time through 2013, canton dependent; here is a summary from Curaviva, the association of care homes:

Canton ZH specifically:

And a few threads on the topic:

Cost of nursing home or residential care?

Retirement Home Lausanne or Evian

But the bottom line: Save your pennies and Rappen. And, more importantly, disscuss your wishes with your children, make concrete plans so that your wishes can be put into action when needed. Essential if you live far away from elderly parents who might need your help in the coming years, or if you expect your children to pursue the same type of global opportunities that so many of us here on EF have.
