How quickly can I get appointment with GP (family doctor)?

Hi all, how quickly can I get appointment with GP (family doctor)? The Family doctor model is cheaper, but I am concerned that, if it takes many days to get appointment with GP, then is this not a problem?
Many thanks,
Marguerite

Re: How quickly can I get appointment with GP (family doctor)?

It largely depends on your doctor. Our local doc is a one-man shop. Unless something is falling off, you will not get an immediate appointment. A week or two in advance is common, and when he's on vacation you have to try and see another doc in the area. If your doctor is part of a group practice, you might have better luck being seen on short notice by someone.

Re: How quickly can I get appointment with GP (family doctor)?

It depends on the doctor and what's wrong with you.
Some doctors only work part time so it's obviously more difficult to get an appointment with them. If you do have a part time doctor and you fall ill enough to need to see a doctor on that day the insurance will reimburse you for a visit to another doctor.

At our GP if it's a routine appointment/follow up then they're usually scheduled quite far in advance, a non emergency appointment is maybe two or three days and if it's a real emergency then he will usually fit you in the same day.

Not sure why this question needed two threads.

Re: How quickly can I get appointment with GP (family doctor)?

If it's not urgent I get to see the GP (Hausarzt) in 2 to 3 days. If it's urgent the same or next day.

If you go to Artzthaus, they have 5 GP's and very good hours (especially for people who work), so it's very easy to get an appointment fast and when you need it. Here's the info:

Zürich
arzthaus
Lintheschergasse 3
8001 Zürich

Phone: 044 800 39 00
Fax: 044 800 39 01

Office hours:
07.00 - 21.00 Monday - Friday
09.00 - 18.00 Saturday
11.00 - 18.00 Sunday/Holidays

OP is in Basel. Anyone know if there's something similar there?

Re: How quickly can I get appointment with GP (family doctor)?

I wanted to make an appointment at university hospital and I'm not sure whether I was correctly treated or not.

I've sent them an email and also called them in order to make an appointment and they've said that there is a waiting list and that it would last few months to get in turn. I've said that I'm OK with waiting and that I'd like to get on the list regardless. Then they've sent me contact of some clinic (probably some affiliated stuff), saying that I may get an appointment there. I was clear that I don't want appointment at anybody else, but only with them. Then they've told me that I was put on the list. After 2 months I've contacted them again, asking if they can update me with my waiting status, but they ignored all my mails. I believe there is no list and if there is one, I'm not on it. I think I was rejected in a not direct manner.

I wonder, are university hospitals allowed to reject patients? Was their procedure correct?

An appointment for what? Were you referred by your GP?

No. Hospital staff that said appointment is not necessary. A bit bizzare, but hey, they've said it.

For the UPD, a referral is needed, see here https://www.upd.ch/angebot/erwachsen...e-Sprechstunde

I suspect a miscommunication has happened somewhere in the process .....

Appointments
are always necessary unless it's an emergency. Some specialists don't require referrals from a GP, but many times insurance will only cover the expense of seeing specialists if the GP refers.

Perhaps you mean referral?

Ah, you said university hospital and have location Bern. Perhaps good to be clear with the details, then you can get better answers

Re: How quickly can I get appointment with GP (family doctor)?

Whilst a referral from a GP may not be required, in my experience getting an appointment is much quicker and easier if you have one.

Re: How quickly can I get appointment with GP (family doctor)?

My experience is with a different department at Unispital, but assuming things work similarly:

While technically one can make an appointment on one's own, in reality a referral from your GP or other doctor is the thing that will get you seen in anything like a timely fashion. Without a referral, one can get stuck waiting months and months - because patients with referrals take precedence.

As to your question of whether or not you were rejected: I'd guess benign administrative chaos is more likely to blame than anything else.

So - if you are adamant that you want to be seen by a particular doctor or team at Unispital, perhaps start over with your GP or other doctor familiar with your situation and ask for a referral. That should get the ball rolling in the right direction.

Wishing you all the best.
