Smoking in cars with children banned in England and Wales

Will there be a similar ban here in Switzerland as well soon?

I doubt it - as 1cm from a public building/train door/bus entrance etc. smoking's considered fair game.

Looking forward to the next eternal pro/con smoking thread.

I doubt it as smokers rights as voted in by direct democracy comes before the health of children who don't get a vote.

Hurrah for direct democracy for health care! *

* But don't worry as they voted instead to allow funding of homeopathic treatment on basic health care so your compulsory insurance pays for sugar pills.

Hurrah again!

Re: Smoking in cars with children banned in England and Wales

When I was younger it was acceptable to smoke with kids in the car. I remember my Grandad would barely crack the window and we would be chocked from the smoke whilst sitting in the back seat . . . . However, he was usually bringing us to get ice-creams so... we were okay with it

Wonder how long itll be till they are completely banned from cars. I recall reading somewhere that they can be as distracting as phones (I don’t think they are that distracting)

(Maybe something was mentioned in the video but I am unable to watch it)

So was corporal punishment - whether in the car or not

I saw the news today and immediately thought of "Smoking on the train platforms" thread... and of the bus stations in Lausanne that recently had new ashtrays installed inside the bus shelters

Illegal to smoke in a car with a child onboard
Legal to smoke when pregnant

I remember when seat belts were not mandatory. Little kids could sit in the front seat (without seat belts). I also remember sitting in the back of pickup trucks (5-10 of us) flying down the interstates. Times are a changin'.

However it's self-limiting to an extent as smoking decreases both the chance of the woman becoming pregnant and increases the chances of a miscarriage.

Given that it's legal for children to smoke at cattle shows in some parts of Switzerland I can't see that happening here any time soon.

For my new year's resolution I've decided to only smoke after sex.

If this year is anything to go by, it looks like I've quit.

We have the same in Glarnerland.

I've heard it argued that letting children try it (and cough their guts up) removes the "forbidden fruit" aspect of smoking and serves as a disincentive to take it up properly later. No idea if there's any truth in that.

Yikes! I learn something new about CH every day.

Next Phillips Morris ad captions, please!

1. The drag that lasts a lifetime.
2. Proudly sporting generations of smokers.

Probably not much as most lifelong committed smokers start when they are young.

Re: Smoking in cars with children banned in England and Wales

Well done to UK and Wales. The question is how to implement such a law.

Unfortunately for Switzerland they have a big problem with a large number of kids barely out of school that are already heavy smokers.

It seems to me that the legal age to buy cigarettes in Switzerland is very low compared to other European countries. Is it 16?

None whatsoever. Probably a bit of disinformation dreamed up by the tobacco companies.

Can you still get cigarettes at vending machines at the station or was that stopped a couple of years ago?

I have no idea. Since we don't smoke I Don't really pay attention to cigarette vending machines (or any other vending machines for that matter).
