Bringing Kidney Dialysis solution from the US

Hello,

My father is on dialysis and would like to visit me here in Zürich. The company does not deliver to Switzerland because they use something different here. I can go to a friend's place on the border in France to pick it up. I don't know what kind of issues I may have driving it back. Does anyone know where I might start to look to make sure I am allowed to do this? And of course have the proper paperwork. I am just concerned that since it is not allowed to be shipped here, I may not be allowed to drive it in either. Any help would be appreciated!!

Thank you,
Amanda

Amanda, the easiest way to organize this is to speak with your GP as a first step.

He/she should be able to put you in touch with the necessary people or resources, and possibly might even be able to help directly with some of the arrangements.

Hope your father enjoys his visit.

Also carefully check the terms and conditions of any travel insurance he takes out. They may well not cover him for dialysis treatment here as he already needs it so you/he could end up paying a lot of money for this.

Medea, he is doing manual exchanges on his own while here. My mom is a retired nurse and helps him with this. Normally he uses and overnight machine setup in his room, but that is not an option for travel.

So what are you thinking of doing? Renting a machine while here? Again, check his travel insurance because such costs may not be covered and it could be expensive to rent such a machine here.

No machine necessary for manual exchanges. Just the solution that I can't get here. Which is the original question about driving it over the border. We have everything else figured out with travel insurance and such.

I looked into this once.

There is a holiday change program in operation globally.

Dont buy some solution or filter in x and expect a docotor to use it in location y.

Re: Bringing Kidney Dialysis solution from the US

Burner, there is no doctor or treatment needed. It is done manually by my dad. I am just asking about documents needed to bring the solution over the border from the company he uses in the US.

As Meloncollie says, speak with your doctor here first to see what he can advise.

You could also contact Swiss Customs Adminstration using the contact form at the bottom of this link:

http://www.ezv.admin.ch/index.html?lang=en

They may also be able to advise you whether you could bring the solution over from France and what documents would be needed if it's possible.

Goods that are for private usage and that do not exceed CHF 300 can generally be brought into CH duty-free, excepting some items such as tobacco, alcohol, meat, etc. To the extent that the value of the fluid does not exceed CHF 300, you should be able to import it. Have a receipt ready if asked at the border:

Additionally - the usual solution can be found under customs chapter 3004.39 (I think....) - I don't see any mention of any special import documentation or requirements at all there & it should be duty-free (VAT will still apply though)!

However, since you mention the US variant may be a bit different, it *could* be found in a different chapter... may still be helpful when talking to customs.. good luck!
