Where to get married in 30 days?

My bf and I (Swiss and US) have a specific date that means a lot to us, October 24th. Despite some optimistic info he was first given, it now sounds like we won't be able to get the pieces to fall into place for a Swiss marriage between now and then - because of work reasons, it turns out that I can't return to Switzerland until 4 to 5 weeks before the intended wedding date, and from what I've read, a month isn't enough time.

We can't do it in Vegas - he has to work in Switzerland the next day.

Has anyone had a positive experience getting married in a neighboring country with a month of preparation time? Any general words of wisdom?

Re: Where to get married in 30 days?

New York is only 24 hour wait.

4 weeks can work here, though perhaps not if you are not both Swiss.

Wow. That's nothing.

Still, I'd really like to avoid making him spend his weekend on an airplane. We have way more than 24 hours... Maybe a month isn't long enough anywhere in Europe?

Maybe I can get naturalized between now and then...

Re: Where to get married in 30 days?

Some of the info on what you'll need here:

https://www.ch.ch/en/civil-wedding-ceremony/

And perhaps a salutory lesson in how not to do it in post 12 in this thread:

Not so new, in many ways

France you often need ties to the country to get married there, Germany paperwork (recommended to start 6 months in advance), but Italy might be possible. Still as a US citizen there are things you need to have done and I suspect a month wouldn't be enough time.

http://www.italiandestinationwedding...ents-in-italy/

UK also might be possible, though it takes at least 3 weeks to get the required visa.

https://www.gov.uk/marriage-visa/overview

Best bet, start planning to get married on 24th October 2017.

Re: Where to get married in 30 days?

My two Rappen? Do the legal stuff on any day you want that works for both. Then have a huge party and religious ceremony (if you want) on the date that's most special to you. Just because your marriage license says one day and the celebration was another doesn't mean it's any less important or special.

Life doesn't always line up perfectly. Up to you and your loved one. What's more important - being married, or being married exactly on October 24th?

A couple of my friends (both not swiss) got married in Gibraltar and they said it was the country that could process everything the fastest.

You can get married in Malta with a minimum of 6 weeks notice, no requirements to be resident. Window for all documents to be delivered is 6 weeks - 3 months, so plenty of time.

Very friendly at the Marriage registry, everything is in English.

Maybe I can get naturalized between now and then...
Way back in 1994, I married my ex husband in Salzburg, Austria, even though we were both British and living in the UK. It was all arranged by phone and mail, being pre-internet era , and we only had to physically be in the city 3 days before the ceremony, and there had to be a gap of at least 24hrs between the registry office ceremony (December 23rd) and religious service. The entire process from deciding where to get married to the actual wedding day, took 5 months, but it only took a month to get both wedding dates booked. The longest part of that process was getting official translations of the legal documents required, e.g. birth certificates.

You can get current details here...

http://www.salzburg.info/en/service/...g_for/weddings

Salzburg Registry Office hold civil ceremonies in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace, making this venue one of the most beautiful registry offices in the World. We had the religious ceremony 3 days later (December 26th) in the private chapel of Franziskanerkirche, which is just across Domplatz from the Cathedral.

For the religious ceremony, we wrote to the Bishop of Salzburg's office and had a reply within a week listing 3 English speaking priests in the city centre that we could write to. The priest of Franziskanerkirche was the first to reply so we chose him. The second to reply was St Peters Abbey, and the third was unavailable.

We stayed at the Hotel Gablerbräu on Linzergasse, which is now a Star Inn. Hotel reception booked 4 taxis to the Mirabell for us, which just happened to be 2 white Mercedes and 2 silver BMWs, and the drivers decorated the cars when they arrived and realised they'd been booked for a wedding. The wedding reception was just a table for 10 people in the Richard Mayr Stube of the Gablerbräu, which is still run as a restaurant. The other hotel guests joined in our little reception, so the numbers soon swelled to over 40 and the party went on til 2am, though muggins here didn't get to bed til 4 after going window shopping with the best man and my 4yr old bridesmaid (who wanted a snow ball fight with me and her dad)

http://www.gablerbrau.at/en/our-room...tube-58-seats/

If you like the idea, just drop them an email and see what they say.
Good luck!

EDIT: Austria only joined the EU on 1st January, 1995, and we were told by the registrar that we were the last couple to marry in Salzburg before they joined the EU.

I've been reliably informed by a very highly placed source, next to his eminence "The Font of all important Information" that a further 24th October has been scheduled for 2017.

As yet it is not confirmed, but the great man himself whispered in my sources' shell, that it was going ahead

Re: Where to get married in 30 days?

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for all the useful responses. And links. Hopefully they'll also help other people in the same boat. So many romantic places to slow-elope!

We haven't yet decided what we're going to do. There won't be any church or reception, so the special date is the only date. But in the end nothing will change except we can be together with less hassle. And taxes going way up... maybe we should push it back to 2017 after all...

Interestingly we were informed that I would easily qualify for concubinage. Everything I'd read made it sound next to impossible to get. So that's another option.

Re: Where to get married in 30 days?

As a Swiss national, nothing is usually that difficult. As an EU national and a non-EU, more difficult. As a non-EU and non-EU concubine permit is impossible in Zurich canton someone posted here recently. So thank your lucky stars you fell in love with the right nationality!

Not true unless one of you being Swiss adds some restrictions. We had three weeks, got married in Kloten.

It was three weeks because prefered the date, but it was possible to pick an earlier dates as well. Generally there are much more dates available if the ceremeny is in German, though you can also come with a certified translator.

Re: Where to get married in 30 days?

A fairy loses its wings when people don't come back to update threads with learned wisdom, so maybe this can help someone else.

1. It would have been possible to do it in under a month assuming one brings over the requisite papers. I think the permission showed up a week or two after we submitted everything. Come to think of it, the first step is a matter of mailing in a bunch of stuff, so my OH could have handled that before my arrival. I wasn't physically needed until the interview.

2. Zürich can conduct the interview in English, no hired interpreter needed. And for a small additional fee, also the ceremony, but only on certain days.

3. If you look on the website (or otherwise look to see what's available) it will seem that everything is booked out months in advance, but once you have permission, you'll see plenty of openings for right after the waiting period.

There's surely more, but that's all I can remember right now.
