Doctors [concerned about diabetes and looking for advice]

Hi i was curious if i go to the UK and pay private for a blood test can you do that living in CH obviously i dont want/expect the NHS to pay for me, but im terrified i may have diabetes, symptoms are numb legs from the knee down and pins and needles in my finger tips, very tired all the time too. Ive not been to a doctor in 7 years so im ashamed to admit im terrified of going, wondering if i will be more comfortable in my own country

Re: Doctors

Just get a tester from a pharmacy. They're not hugely expensive because they make their profit on test strips (there'll be some in the pack to start you off).

Erm, if you suspect you have diabetes, which can be quite serious, why not see a proper medical professional, such as a doctor?

Go to the doctor. Self diagnosing via the Interweb is never a good idea. Ask your OH or a friend to go with you - knowing a friendly face is in the waiting room may help. Good luck and I hope you get a diagnosis soon.

PaddyG got there first. Seriously, get off EF and phone your doctor.

Re: Doctors

Hayleyjay1, this is going to seem condescending, because it is.

How much money have you given to fortune tellers in the last 7 years?

With all due respect, that sum, plus whatever it would cost you to return to the UK to have a basic check-up would almost certainly be less than any additional charges to have a check-up done here (including an asessment of the symptoms you mention), and it would tell you a lot more useful information about your future, including what therapy might be in order.

You should be more scared of the long term health aspects of ignoring some (possibly trivial) condition.

It could be something as simple as a vitamin deficit, but you aren't likely to be able to make that diagnosis on your own.

GO TO THE DOCTOR!

Never mind the fortune tellers.

Hayleyjay1 - just add up how much money you've been pouring into your health insurance over 7 years. Just for the sake of a return on investment you should try to get some use out of it.

The doctors here are really good and you can get blood test results back very quickly.

Give it a try, and if it goes wrong you are fully entitled to come back to the forum and have a massive rant in Complaints Corner.

Surely you're currently far more terrified of all the nightmarish possibilities in your head. Go. And. See. A. Medical. Professional. You're probably not as scared of the doc as you are of the (possible) diagnosis. This is no way to live. I sympathise but do not understand, especially if you have dependants.

Undertakers can be quite nice people. Except for the part about draining all your bodily fluids and replacing them with embalming fluid. And the large bill. The rooms are a bit small, but they do have wood panelling.
