Efficiency at its best on a Sunday

This is a post to compliment the doctors, nurses and healthcare administrators who made a sudden illness bout less painful than it could have been.

I woke up on Sunday morning with a severe pain in my lower right jaw and a swelling on the right side of my neck. When it didn't go away by mid day, I made a trip to Permanance at Zurich HB expecting I'd need to wait hours to see a doctor. In the end, I was lucky and only 3 people were ahead of me.

The doctor who saw me did a through examination of my mouth and neck, then immediately ordered a Permanance nurse to draw blood for testing. He also immediately gave me a liquid based pain killer that helped in relieving the pain.
Meanwhile, the doctor informed me that this was likely a blocked saliva duct and inflamed lymph nodes and he'd like me to get it checked out at Zurich university hospital immediately. He called them up to let them know I was coming, typed up the referral letter, included the blood test results and sent me on my way with instructions.

10 mins by tram later I was registered (English forms!) at Zurich university hospital and directed very clearly to the oral department to see a specialist. I waited no more than 15 minutes when the specialist arrived and proceeded to do another through examination. She didn't think I needed surgery to unblock the duct at the moment and provided clear guidance on what to look out for in 24 hours to monitor the situation. I was also given the direct number to the oral department to call in case of an emergency. With my prescription in hand, I was back at the pharmacy to get my medication.

Everything took me just 2 hours, start to finish and now I'm happy to report I'm feeling better and very much grateful.

All this, on a Sunday! Talk about efficiency!
