Arriving in Switzerland - what insurance to pick for pregnant wife

Hello Everyone

I am completely new to the forum, so apologies if I am writing in the wrong forum section

I have been offered a very exciting job for an IT company in Zurich for which I applied few weeks back. As it happened during the recruitment process, we realized that my wife is also pregnant which are great news but making our relocation a little bit trickier (or hope not).

Since I would be the only one working, what is the proper insurance type (any recommendations please) for her and the future baby to receive proper health and social care?

I have not discussed that with my future employer but from what I read each individual is insured separately and there is no particular family insurance type. Which are the insurance companies you would recommend for such scenarios and what is their coverage?

PS: We both are EU ciitizens if that makes a difference for the insurance

Many thanks in advance!

Insurance companies are obliged to take you on at the mimimum conditions (which are excellent) from the day you become resident in CH. You won't get any additional assurance, but you don't need it.

When my wife was pregnant we had an ultrasound every 4-6 weeks and 20-30 mins consultation with doctor to talk about whatever, all paid for by the insurance and considered normal treatment.

A friend of ours had a baby the UK, 2 ultrasounds appointments, one of which was cancelled and not replaced, 10 minutes with a doctor and 10 minutes with a non descript "health care worker"..........

Your wife will be fine here.

Re: Arriving in Switzerland - what insurance to pick for pregnant wife

All insurers have to provide basic mandatory cover and this will do fine. Also you usually can't get additional cover for pregnancy if you're already pregnant I believe - something like a year on the insurance before you could add supplementary cover.

So play around with www.comparis.ch to see what suits your needs best.

The way it works is that you select a franchise of between 300 and 2,500 (this is what you'd pay yourself first before the insurance kicks in). Lower franchise means higher premiums, higher franchise lower ones. There are also several different models to choose from, again read carefully and see what would suit you best.

Thank you folks for the prompt responses. What is most important is that we are sort of relieved now, knowing that we would have everything covered with the proper insurance

Congrats!!

Basic Health insurance:
This is mandatory. Coverage is same from all companies and its more than adequate. Take the hightest franchise(CHF 2500.-) for your wife because it doesn't apply during pregnancy and it will lower her premium. For you decide based on your health condition. You can sign up in advance for the baby.

Accident Insurance: This is mandatory. If you are working then its taken/paid by employer otherwise it needs to be taken along health insurance.

Supplementry Health Insurance: This is not madatory. This gives access to things which are not covered by Basic for e.g. private room at the hospital but as your wife is already pregnant she will not get the benefits but may be for the future. This can also be taken for your baby and there will be no questionaire to fill so no chance of rejection or exclusion.

Official website to compare premiums offered by different companies:

Note re the accident insurance. If you're working more than 8 hours a week then your employer covers this for you. Your wife will not be covered and so must add this to her insurance policy when she takes it out. Same for the little one when it arrives.

Re: Arriving in Switzerland - what insurance to pick for pregnant wife

For your wife there are some important points.

1. if she is not working she needs to add on the accident insurance.
2. the unborn baby should be insured before the birth (7th or 8th month): if there are complications at birth these need to be covered. The premiums are not charged until the baby is born.
3. there is a small advantage if the mother and baby have the same insurance company, simpler billing & less chance of wrong billing.
4. if she always goes to the same doctor, she can save a lot of money by taking an HMO policy, but she must always visit the health center first, and then she can see any doctor at the practice.
4. the very cheap insurance companies have appalling administration.

I have been using Visana since 1990, no problems at all, but Visana is one of the most expensive companies. However using their HMO policy the premiums become one of the cheapest.

The cheaper companies spend time looking for excuses not to pay you the full claim, and then repay you maybe 2 months late. With Visana it is nearer a 2 week wait for the claim to be paid out.

Some people enjoy Telmed: every time you are ill, you must telephone an unknown doctor who diagnoses your complaint. He then sends you to another unknown doctor. The disadvantage is that as your medical records are held by various doctors in town, it can be difficult getting a correct diagnosis...

Also check how the insurance company deals with the various medical invoices. With some companies like Visana you pay the whole medical invoice yourself every time and then claim the majority of it back from the insurer. With others like CSS the medical invoices are sent straight to them and then they bill you for your share (the 10% you pay after you've used up your franchise amount).

You can also look into the hopital where your wife will give birth and pay the difference yourself for a private room.
