Swiss Federal Railways, SBB, is said to be planning to outlaw smoking at five stations in Switzerland from next month.
Fantastic!! Now for a ban at tram stops and the ferries and it will make for a much more pleasant life for us non smokers!!

Re: A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

In Basel SBB I did not see any change that indicates enforcing the ban, smoking is still allowed inside the station. Are they going to phase it in and Basel is in the queue? Any news about ban enforcement in any of the other designated stations?

Re: A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

Question: is smoking grass in public a felony? God, I hate the smell and even worse, I gag at it when people smoke a joint before entering a tram or train. Seriously.. I'd rather smell BO.

Outlawing smoking at bus stops would be good also. I can see this working if fines are imposed which generate income for the SBB.

Could be worse - you could piss off a non-smoker in Russia...

Non-smoker hacks off his room-mate's penis and decapitates him because he was fed up with his cigarettes.

The DM readers' comments are scary too:
"A bit extreme I think", "I find smoking disgusting, but this is a bit harsh", "A bit of an overreaction", "A bit too harsh..."..

Yeah...a bit.

Son said he has seen no smoking at all outside the big designated 'glass boxes' in the station at Neuchâtel.

Nothing in Stadelhofen either.

Guess SBB has "better things to do", like downgrading to their old shifting system ..

DL21 has become a little unpopular
Re: A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

what exactly is there to trial? why not just ban it in all stations nationwide? there's no positive side to having smoke filled stations a la 1970s.

and its not as if smokers are going to stop using the trains and bankrupt SBB....

They could also mandate that people smell nice and only eat organic food (because karma).

Enforcing isn't free either.

You need the people who hand out the fines and you need the Securitas body-guards to protect them (smokers often don't really like it when they have to stop smoking right on the spot. And they don't like the fines).

Train conductors have the power to impose fines on people who are not in possession of a valid ticket and they are not normally accompanied by security staff.
