Chewing gum prevents pot holes forming.
That's an interesting theory which doesn't sound crazy on the face of it. What we could have here is a kind of ad hoc composite material (like carbon fibre composite) where the chewing gum is the matrix.

Are they being kept in storage in case smoking becomes popular again?

It's a trial only.

Nut sure why they feel they need to have a trial. What are they measuring and what is a 'successful' trial?

Re: A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

Nyon station has the "updates" installed now... Basically a blue line incorporating occasional no smoking signs painted around the perimeter.. Those ashtray bins have been installed outside. The inside bins with built in ashtray changed to no ashtray..

Result so far is that virtually nobody cares. smoking as usual, just no ashtray to throw it. Only people i've seen take notice (maybe) was a group of teenagers this morning who stood by the outside ashtray and disposed there before crossing the thin blue line.

Now call me racist .. But many of the smokers are middle aged Swiss, probably the hardest to target with such rules, they've always done it, why stop now.

Re: A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

I have to applaud the move, and finally see some action. Although I dont understand why its a trial. Im a Canadian Swiss, but find it appalling at the number of people that smoke here. Not only that , they have no regard for people or anything around them when the puff their smoke. Its very difficult to find a place to stand at the train, tram or bus station/stop where your not choking down putrid air. I get that smokers have the right to smoke. Fine, but dont know why they must do it anywhere and everywhere. Have designated zones, so we finally have a place to stand without smoke air encroachment , calm winds withstanding.

In Canada, smoking in banned at public transportation areas, and no smoking 6m from public building entrances. Here you have to walk through the smoke from smokers right at the entrance. Disgusting. They can breath in their cancer inducing toxins, that is their right, but dont make everyone feel they must too.

For a country that prides itself on one of the best health care systems in the world, and for cleanliness, they dont seem to have much concern for their citizens health. I dont see any anti smoking campaigns even. Quite mind boggling. Nevertheless, this move from SBB is at least a step in the right direction. Just my 2c worth.

I think a factor there is the strong privacy ethic in the Swiss culture.

I can guess why you maybe especially affected by outdoor smoking - after all, smoke rises...

The trial will be a success if people go along with it. The SBB / CFF don't have the power to enforce such a ban with fines, at least not yet.

All the big tobacco companies have offices in Switzerland and they contribute to politicians in the Cantons and in Bern. How much? No way to know as there is little transparency here. Suffice to say that anti-tobacco referendum/initiatives, while popular with the people, are not popular with politicians.

Smoking gun.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves about smoking. That, and the butt litter that ends up everywhere.

Re: A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

In Basel people are still ignoring the ban and even continue smoking when you point out the ban. The problem is the lack of signs in the station and a financial deferent to prevent smoking. There should be fines of up to 1000chf for smoking. It is up to the SBB to provide a non toxic environment in their stations and trains.

Have fun
Martin
