Actually, maybe you do have some talent as a comedian after all.
Great Arguments. I totally see your point now.

Also, PS: You quoted the whole thing. Yaaaay! But "took" only part of it and replied to that. Smh.

EDIT : Jesus H Christ, my alter ego is asking me to be nice. So I'll try again.

No one is saying its cool to smoke. Or that its good for you.
Or that the younglings should. In fact they shouldnt.
Its a nasty habit and has been proven to increase the risk of many harmful diseases and conditions.

BUT...

...and here is the fun bit Tom1234, every individual can decide. That's what living in a free country means.
Its no more important to me what mister big shot in the big old interview says than it is what a nobody on the street says.
If your argument is ban ban ban ban ban, then the smokers have the right to retaliate since you are infringing on their right to do with their body as they please.
You don't like the smoke? Ofcourse. Its nasty and unpleasant to some.
Move upwind. Or ask politely. Smokers are like you and me. Nice bunch. Sometimes well dressed.

Having respect for each other helps.
Smokers smoke. Druggies drug. Twerkers twerk. And haters hate.
Simple beans!

As far as I can see, no-one is asking for it to be banned. Imo everyone should be free to do whatever they want with their own body as long as it doesn't directly adversely affect others - smoking, drinking, drugs, whatever. The critical point is that bit about other people. So yes, stop smokers doing it where it affects other people which will include public spaces. The onus should be on the smoker to ensure that s/he doesn't affect others and not the non-smoker.

Long experience in CH has however shown that a great many smokers refuse to respect others.

Well yes. In general. But its a two way street really.

My experience has shown the opposite. Its all about respect in the end. Most non-smokers "tell" and don't "ask". Which doesn't help.

What is your experience, exactly? I'd love to hear it.

I've written about the incredibly unbelievable actions of smokers on this forum before (especially smokers around young children, babies and pregnant women).

Applying the same logic you can't do very much because an awful lot of people's actions affect someone else. The effect of them may be marginal in many cases but so is catching a whiff of smoke.

How about the freedom of non-smokers to breathe reasonably fresh, un-contaminated (by tobacco smoke anyway) air? Or doesn't that count?
I fart in your general direction.

Just a whiff of smoke at Zurich HauptBhf or many other stations. Really?

That's not how people from other countries see it when they arrive here expected a clean and fresh Switzerland.

The generations before in Switzerland (your grandparents perhaps) made Switzerland a great place to visit.
I mentioned the Burgenstock on another thread. Audrey Hepburn thought it was so great that she lived there for fifteen years.

Before the rebuild with foreign input and foreign money, the place was a like a ghost town.

Switzerland needs to move with the times and get up-to-date with restaurant quality, smoking rules and hotel accommodation.

Your grandparents generation and those before them did a fantastic job.
The current generation (yours perhaps) just seem concerned about having the latest Audi or BMW and keeping outdated views on smoking etc.

I can't vote but you can. Sort it out rather than having a go at people on this forum.
As you lot keep saying, "It's your country and nothing to do with us".

Sort it out.

Yeah, my grandfather was a truck driver here. He told me it was a bitch piling all these rocks up and driving up on them before they were safely settled. But he also said, after building the Alpes it was actually peanuts.

No it doesn't.

I keep wondering whether you talk about building the direct democracy, the uniting 4 language groups under one umbrella by leaving as much freedom to each as possible, making sure everyone is tolerated by the others and putting power in as many hands as possible? (I'm quite sure that was not done by Urs Max's grandparents though .... or he is reeeaaalllly old )

Naaaa, that can't possibly be it.

As my Dutch BMW (sorry, in-joke) is in the garage I had time to enjoy your posts today. Did you get your shutters to stop going up and down without touching the remote yet? Jedem Tierchen sein Pläsierchen. Ah, no, sorry, that presupposes tolerance. I take that back.

The experiment at Nyon station is not working. No enforcement means the smokers are continuing to smoke on the platforms. One smoker on my train lit up before the carriage doors had opened. Addiction is a terrible thing.

That's the attitude I was describing.

That's why people (apart from Russians and a few Chinese) don't flock here any more.

Still, things are improving, as I said, with foreign investment and foreign knowledge.

Re: A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

Switzerland can be a good place to live because of the freedom to make your own choices. But in the case of cigarette smoke in public transit stations, I fail to see how the debate is much different than the current gun control debate in the US? Of course the secondhand smoke is directly affecting others. Elderly, small children, those who suffer from lung conditions, ... they are trying to use public transit, which is generally considered the healthy choice. But to do so they must subject themselves to the "freedom" of the other passengers in the form of secondhand smoke. Tons of it! Our family does not own a car, a conscious choice, we have always subscribed to the GA. But year after year of guiding small children through a continuous cloud of cigarette smoke just so we can utilize transit, at the moment I am feeling really sick of it. When does another person's freedom affect my family's health and so the freedom logically should be limited.

My father used to bitch because as a child I eat them in Switzerland yet not in Guayaquil.
Nope, I have no idea why I did that. LOL. Maybe I simply hadn't developed the feeling of "this belongs here and that belongs there" yet.
