A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

https://www.thelocal.ch/20171102/sbb...an-in-stations

Swiss Federal Railways, SBB, is said to be planning to outlaw smoking at five stations in Switzerland from next month.

Station buildings became smoke-free but railway passengers are still permitted to puff cigarettes on the platforms.
How would that work at Zurich Stadelhofen, given the passage is already smoke free (isn't it?) like RailCity at the HB?

Not too bothered about the smoking in the bahnhof.
I would prefer if they concentrated their efforts on getting rid of all the dodgy buggers hanging around the bahnhofs making life creepy and dangerous for the commuters.
Cannot even go to a cash machine in Aarau station without being accosted with some guy with a bullshit sob story (with a big group of mates)
Feel sorry for the old folk and vunerable.
Smoke free or not - this problem is more unheathy and getting worse.
Especially late at night. My friend got glassed last month on Brugg bahnhof.
He does not smoke.

Useless if platform smoking continues to be permitted

I can't see any benefit right now because smoking is already banned indoors.
So what does it add at, say, Zurich HB or Stadelhofen?

A train station is more than just the building

According to NZZ the ban would include the platforms. They also mentioned that there will be last resort ashtrays a the border of of "the zone". Which in case of Stadelhofen would most likely be a painted line on the ground.

Agree with this .. Geneva station station is getting really bad. Beggers everywhere, quite a few have kids as props now even.. Hek a lady was defecating right by the main entrance last week at 17.30, like literally trousers down, squatting, back against the wall curling off a mr whippy . Second time i've seen people poop there.

Smoking is way down the naughty list at geneva station.

It's not a matter of one or the other: you can fix one without deterrent to the other.

When I lived in Zürich Oberland, many moons ago, this was one of the things that signalled it was time to move to greener pastures. That and the fact my basement had been broken into a second time and my mail box vandalised yet again (hence my scoff on the "Switzerland it totally safe, you people").

The local Assis just gathered around the tiny train station, and to be very honest, they didn't give the most wonderful feeling. The random "you have a cigaret?" eventually grew up to verbal assault, which is not exactly the thing you want to face in the darkness of a cold winter night, being the only person getting off the train...

If it is banned indoors, then I see no evidence of enforcement in the ticket hall, escalators or the overhead concourse in Basel SBB.
But then, smokers are supremely selfish, despite their proclamations otherwise.

You see that bit is what erodes the credibility of the whole thing. Making sweeping generalisations is not helpful.

I'm a life-long NON-smoker, for the record, but I just hate dumb sweeping statements which by definition cannot be correct nor even substantiated.

My local hospital has smoke free zones outside the entrances with big signs to say so, even on the ground yet everytime I go past there are people directly under the signs smoking. If I say anything they tell me to get stuffed. These smoking bans are useless unless they're enforced.

According to the article, station buildings are supposed to be smoke free already. That's certainly not the case in Basel so I suspect it'll make absolutely no difference whatsoever or in fact make it worse.

I hear you! Then the staff comes in to help a patient while reeking of cigarette smoke. Same in Aarau, Baden, and Reha in Rheinfelden. They even have the best smoking spots: right by entrances or the windows.

Re: A perennial EF favourite: smoking ban in SBB

If you read the newspapers, they explain that in 2018 several staions will be given certain rules covering smoking.

In Neuchâtel there will be smoking rooms.
Stadelhofen will have smoke free platforms.
I can't remember the rest.

The public will be interviewed and assessed during 2018, and in 2019 there will probably be a smoking ban, with smoking allowed only in zones/rooms.

Basel, Nyon and Zurich Stadelhofen will be completely smoke free, Neuchâtel will have a smoking lounge and Bellinzona will have three platforms where smoking is allowed in two zones on each platform.

The changes will come into force when the new timetables start on December 8th

Maybe so, but I'm not that far wide of the mark on this one.
