| | Re: What is high Blood pressure? | Quote: | | | | | I bought an upper arm blood pressure monitor and measured my BP, and recorded the results over a month.
I found that the whole body position affects the results, not just crossing the legs.
I found the lowest results were achievable when I sat down at a table,
connect the monitor. Calm down, & wait a few minutes.
Sit in a relaxed position with hands flat on the table, start the monitor, and
place both hands back on table, don't move nor talk during measurement.
Surprisingly when you visit the doctor, none of these precautions are taken. | | | | | I have also discovered that of you remove the back of the monitor there is a little screw you can turn. It has reduced my blood pressure by about 20. Much cheaper than medication. But the pharma lobby doesn't want you to know about this simple trick.

| | Re: What is high Blood pressure? | Quote: | | | | | I too have HBP and take medication despite when I was 55 I had a heart stress test and they told me I was in the top 5% of my age group for fitness.
I just wonder why nobody questions redefining high blood pressure as a reading of 130 over 80. Using this definition then around half the population has HBP so you start to wonder if they are taking the p#ss?
You do agree 195/130 is a very long way away from 130/80; what is the point of frightening people with this new lower definition?
There seems to be little real scientific research to back this new number? More and more often the medical profession is telling us what are safe and unsafe levels in different areas with little research then only to issue new and different guidance later. | | | | | Only a few weeks ago at a check up the doc told me that at my age a BP of 130 to 150 over 50 to 70 is ok with a Heart rate of 70 to 90.
Mine was at the time 135 over 65 and a heart rate of 60 | This user would like to thank slammer for this useful post: | |

Oh the irony.... I'm reading this all while doing the 24-hour blood pressure monitoring for the 5th time in my life (in my case it's all about the "super genes" and I've been closely monitored since I was a toddler).
I will now need to start medication but it certainly doesn't mean I won't try my very hardest to minimise the dose with healthy choices. It is what it is, can't do much about it. I'm just happy there's medication available for people like me who can't really impact the horrible readings too much.

Run as fast as you like but you still wont escape from your genes. | | | | | My blood pressure has not moved off of 136/68 for years. No difference between the dormant, middle of Minnesota winter hibernation mode or the post Chicago Marathon running weight or the current, hike the crap out of the Swiss trail system mode.
I dread going to a new doctor and hear about my "pre-hypertensive" levels and that I must start changing my diet and lifestyle right now!

| | Re: What is high Blood pressure? | Quote: | | | | | | | | | | I read through the link you provided. Not only is it medically incorrect and based on myths as to the symptoms e.g. flushed and red face, I find it very frightening that anyone would advise such codswallop to someone. The risks associated with high blood pressure are huge, and it's results if left medically untreated where necessary (but not at 130/80) is the cause of all leading causes of permanent disability and death. Well what is more important is your blood pressure when you are out on the street or working. One does not sit all day at home.
The lower measurement is the most critical as its when the heart is relaxing. | Quote: | | | | | I bought an upper arm blood pressure monitor and measured my BP, and recorded the results over a month.
