Urgent advice and help needed please [bleeding after dental surgery]

Hi, we need some urgent advice please. My husband has 2 wisdom teeth taken out in London last week and has been recovering ok for the last 7 days. However, sinve late last night, he is heavily bleeding from one of the sockets and is experiencing mind pain. This has been happening throughout the night. What can he do? We do not have a dentist in Geneva yet (we moved here very recently from london). Is this something we can go to hospital for? Please any advice is much appreciated asap.

This one jas a big red sign outside which say "URGENCES" .. So I'd hazard a guess you could head there.

Tram 12, stop Roches

* Can you go to the hospital.. Sure, I would go if something really worried me.. Worst case they tell you it's not urgent and go see a dentist. And send you a bill of course.

I'm sure the hospital would have the contact of an all call dentist or know where to send them.

Do a google search of "permanence dentaire geneve" and a number of solutions pop up.

Clinique Dentaire de Nations, Clinident, Medical-Dental Centre Balexert, etc... just choose one to call.

Wow, as of lately people are getting members on EF to make health/life decisions for them.

Didn't know EF was an online clinic too...

Hello,

we have good experience at https://www.cmdbalexert.ch/en in Geneva (they are also open on Saturday) and also at the http://www.clinique-dentaire-genolier.ch/en/ in Genolier (they do not cover emergencies).

Hope it helps...

Re: Urgent advice and help needed please

Apparently, posting on EF is step number 1 if you have a medical issue.

As with any medical emergency, you go to the emergency room at any hospital nearby or a 24/7 medical center. They will of course refer to any specialized doctor including a dentist if required. Or, since you posted this in the morning, you call any dentist you find in your city and tell them it's an emergency, cause blood, and they will likely take you/him immediately.

Hence my thoughts exactly,

Next time before someone calls the emergency number please come and post here on EF, we are all waiting in despair ready to reply as professional doctors.

Also we can also advise you on which university you should go to, which career you should pursue and most importantly if you should get divorced or not.

I understood it as the OP asking whether the husband should go to hospital, not whether he should seek medical attention in general.

Knowing Switzerland as I do, the set up is different here to what it is in say, England. You don't just tralalala off to the emergency room for "non-emergencies", rather find a nearby on call doctor (or dentist in this case).

I guess the OP was looking firstly for confirmation that she was right or wrong about going directly to hospital and secondly, recommendations from people in the area.

what about a new forum rule that requires to post pictures of the issue so that all anonymous members can give detailed medical advice?

Agreed you cant just stroll in for a "headache" but the OP stated:

"However, sinve late last night, he is heavily bleeding from one of the sockets and is experiencing mind pain. This has been happening throughout the night. "

Heavy bleeding and pain throughout the night seems a good enough reason to walk into hospital to prevent too much loss of blood. And Im not even a doctor.

Thank you Sandgrounder; thats exactly the reason i posted on here! We are new in Geneva/switzerland and still trying to figure out how thing are done and whats normal procedure and what isnt. In the UK, for example, there are specialist hospitals that deal with emergency dental probs, you dont just turn up in any a&e randomly.. I understand some people seem to be very bothered by this post and find it quite amusing; i find their sarcasm quite pathetic to be honest. . However i am not going to waste my time and respond to them as thats exactly what that would be, a waste of time!

Re: Urgent advice and help needed please

I've just checked the web page for the Dentisty school attached to the main hospital (HUG) and although they do take patients they don't do emergencies... for that they will refer you to the Urgences section of the hospital itself, the entrance is at the top end of Boulevard de la Cluse, think the official address is #1 Micheli du Crest. HUG will treat the immediate problem and may refer you back to Dentisty or to your own dentist. HUG Urgences is never as busy as a similar set up in the UK so I'd suggest starting there, or go to the place mentioned by Pdslantus .
Make sure you have the number of your health insurance policy with you, or be prepared to be billed on the spot.
Remember that you/your husband were covered from the moment you arrived in the country so anything you pay up front can be reclaimed later on (excluding whatever your franchise is, and depending on what level of dental cover was agreed when you took out your health insurance).

They do, actually, part of the reason of exploding healthcare costs I've seen people go - and being sent (by doctors) - to the emergency room because of a slight stomach ache.

That aside, with "heavy bleeding" - as already pointed out by tigereyeali - you proceed the same way in every country: you go to the hospital.

Re: Urgent advice and help needed please [bleeding after dental surgery]

Some may say that Im being unhelpful or sarcastic,

A friend of mine called to say hes just come out of the ICU and will need the next month recovering.

Cause? His temperature went from normal to 40 degrees within an hour. His GF took the educated decision of immediately taking him to hospital where he was diagnosed with blood poisoning. If he had come a day later he would have been dead.

What he should have done is taken some paracetamol and post an advert on EF and wait for a reply for advice because you cant just "tralalala" into hospital apparently.

There's a spectrum between "Hmm, my friend is burning up, has gone all blotchy and is in immense pain. I'll post on EF and see whether they recommend I take him to hospital" and "Hmm, my friend has got a bit of a headache. I'll post on EF and see whether they recommend I take him to hospital".

Obviously for the first scenario, posting on EF is stupid and even if you don't know the local protocol, taking the person to hospital is the right thing to do. The OP clearly didn't feel their situation was so extreme as to necessitate that. Sometimes it makes sense to canvas opinion, other times not.
