Missed appointment - because I didn't know I had one!

Not really a complaint, more that I'm wondering if anyone else has been in this situation.

Doctor refers me to specialist. I hear nothing for ages. Eventually, I get a phone call while I'm at work, which - obviously - I can't answer.

Pop into the specialist's surgery this morning, as I'm already in the area on other business. Get a bollocking for not turning up for the appointment.

"What appointment? I didn't know anything about an appointment. Did you send me a letter?"

"No, we sent an SMS"

My phone, for reasons hardly relevant here, doesn't receive or send SMSs. To be honest, I didn't think anybody still used them! I was more than a little surprised to discover that an SMS is considered an acceptable way to contact a new patient, especially if no response comes back to them!

I've managed to rebook, but I'm curious if anybody else has heard of such a thing as notification by SMS, and whether I'm likely to be billed for missing an appointment I knew nothing about.

New to me and weird. I switch off data when traveling abroad so wouldn´t receive SMS anyway.

For me not an acceptable way to contact me on doctors appointments

Re: Missed appointment - because I didn't know I had one!

I get a reminder by SMS the day before a dentist's appointment, but I've always made the appointment over the phone.

Do I understand correctly that they just sent you an appointment by SMS, you didn't reply so they assumed you'd a) received it and b) could make the appointment?

That's what seems to be the case.

It's all a bit weird. When I arrived, I rang the bell and walked in (as I've done at every doctor's surgery I've ever visited here), then waited quietly at the reception desk, which was unattended. I didn't cough, shuffle my feet or show any other signs of impatience. After about ten minutes, somebody came out of one of the rooms and tore a right strip off me saying that the receptionist was busy right now and I can't expect to be seen right away and why can't I wait in the waiting room like everybody else and...

Before I did my German course, I'd have chalked it up to a misunderstanding. Unfortunately, my comprehension has improved to the point where I know when someone's being plain rude.

Odd place all round.

You clearly send them appropriate meeting times in advance by the means of courier bird (sparrow is the bird you use normally, correct?), smoke signal, and as well as intra-transcendental ghost message. What else can a man do? So, what are you worrying about if they do not get in touch with you using a normal means of communication and book you w/o any reconfirmation from your side?

tl;dr; 1) Contest the the bill if they have the nerve to send you one. 2) Expect a bill.

Reminders, I can understand. But initial appointment for a new patient? Seems a bit informal and haphazard to me.

The specialist is a specialist. They are about to save your life. If you could save your own life then you wouldn't need an appointment, right? This means that they are a lot more intelligent than you, so however they go about informing you of when they've managed to fit you into a busy day of saving lives must be a better method than you could imagine on your own.

Re: Missed appointment - because I didn't know I had one!

Have been through a multitude of doctors (new and existing) appointments in the past 8 months - so many that I've lost count, but have never once received an sms. A couple of voicemails asking me to call to arrange for an appointment, but definitely no text message.

Dentist and optician is usual though.

I'd certainly dispute it.

I've never received an appointment by SMS. It seems a bit weird to me.

I often get reminders by SMS for appointments that I've already made a couple of days beforehand but they are appointments that I already know about.

aye, that's a reminder but, not the initial appointment making, so no, I don't agree and if they try and charge you I think you have every legitimate reason to refuse to pay it.

Whatsapp and Facebook messenger. Both a lot more versatile than SMS, and cost nothing.

I hardly use the normal phone function these days either. Almost all communication is via the internets.
