My sister died two month ago and we are over clearing her flat

Me and my wife are over clearing her flat in Neuchatel Hauterive. We will be here for about three weeks and have found out Swiss law is complicated .We have got a notary to get us a cert of inheritance and are waiting to get access to her accounts to pay her bills. I am wondering how to access the market place on the forum as we have some stuff to give away and some to sell

You need to have been a member for a week and have made at least 10 posts in areas of the forum which count towards the post count ( so not off topic or marketplace).

If you are on Facebook there are a number of local groups for selling or giving stuff away in the Neuchâtel area.

Just start on making those ten postings.

Can't be too hard, unless you have no opinion on anything ;-)

Some bills can be payed via the bank before the heritage is actually released (rent, taxes of the deceased etc.)

amendment:
Like the others, I forgot to say: My sympathies.

Re: My sister died two month ago and we are over clearing her flat

My sympathies, too, Nigeld.

The following sites offer free adverts:
www.tutti.ch
www.anibis.ch.

If you can translate the ads into the local language, good. If not, try "Google translate", or ask a neighbour. If you really can't get to the local language, which would be a pity, then just put the ad up in English, some people do that.

Best to include as many photos as are allowed, all the measurements, an honest description of and photo of any damage, a clear price, and specifics about collection or delivery, e.g. "On payment in advance, this item can be posted to you for an extra charge of CHF...", or "Must be collected".

The two big Supermarket chains MIGROS and CO-OP often have free noticeboards, where you can hang up ads. However: they must be written or glued onto their own post-card size printed cards, so best to check that format first, and better still ask for a bundle to bring home and assemble.

If you have things to give away for free, you can, in addition to the above, use www.fleedoo.ch, on which all items are free.

I think it is important to you to decide, in yourself, whether you need to sell the objects, because they are worth something and you need or would like the money, or whether it might be less work, or quicker (and this might be a factor of cost, too) to give them away. In that case, some charity shops may take some of the better (but no damaged) items.

If at all possible, try to meet the neighbours. They may help you, too. If any neighbour was a friend to your sister, you might also offer them a gift of something out of the home.

I wish you strength and courage, since it can be a tiring and bewildering process to disband the home of someone you cared about. Hope you get square meals and enough rest.

Sorry for you loss.

If she had children or grand-children, they need to deal with it and not you.

In MIL's case, certificate of inheritance took 14 months, after which accounts were released.

Nigel, Condolences.

If her flat was rented, have you or someone given notice for the flat. Oddity in Switzerland, still responsible for notice period after death.

Re: My sister died two month ago and we are over clearing her flat

Sorry for your loss. It's never an easy thing to go through the belongings of your loved one.

As moggy says, you may still need to give notice on the flat and either pay those months or find a follow-on tenant to take over the lease. In German this term is "nachmieter" but I don't know what the term is in French.

Sorry for your loss.

I really do feel for you as I am going through a very similar thing (but in this case my mother). I know that navigating such matters in a foreign language is complex and frustrating.

All the best.

Given the situation, I'm sure the OP has more than ten, quite legitimate questions, to ask.

Not only in a foreign language. We had a relative who died 2012 - the case was closed mid last year.

Re: My sister died two month ago and we are over clearing her flat

You normally should not have to pay her debts, they will be deducted (along with funeral expense, etc.) from her assets before dividing the residual.

I love in Austria that you must wait for the notar to contact you: "Don't call us, we'll call you".

Re: My sister died two month ago and we are over clearing her flat

This thread is, so far, EF at it's best. Tempting though it is, let's not derail OP's thread with a discussion about the pros and cons of the rules for posting small ads on this Forum.

@Nigel, the rules as they stand are:
"Have 10 posts or more (not including those in off-topic or Marketplace sections)
Been a member for 7 days or longer"
before you can use the Marketplace subforum.
