Re: Tick Vaccination

Depends how much time you're likely to spend in forests or long grass.

If your idea of summer fun is rolling around in summer pastures, get it. If it's drinking whiskey sours in the Odeon, don't bother.

Re: Tick Vaccination

I guess you mean a vaccination against Tick-Born Encephalitis. But no, it's not normally considered necessary. Some areas have a higher risk than others, http://www.ch.ch/en/ticks/ should answer any more detailed questions.

Re: Tick Vaccination

Thank you. With 3 children we will more than likely be out walking/exploring but hopefully sipping drinks on other occasions too!! Looking forward to seeing what Life in Switzerland will be like.

Re: Tick Vaccination

I have it (need to redo it in June this year actually) although generally I'm not big on vaccinations. Stick to the basics. But I live in a high-risk area. I spend lots of time outside and I had a client who took years to recover from a tick-bite.

But no need to panic: Many tick-bites do absolutely no harm.
And no need to feel safe when having the vaccination: There are things tick-bites can cause which can not be prevented.

So I guess DB hit the nail on the head: It depends on your life-style. Just like some vaccinations I only had due to my travels.

Re: Tick Vaccination

Our youngest got a tick on him two days running last week - my wife forgot to use the tick spray.

A couple of days before that, we went on a family hike and the kids asked me why I sprayed around their waists (pulling up their shirts) as well as their bare arms and legs.

That's exactly where the first bite was - kids crouch down in long grass and their T-shirts ride up.

None of ours have ever has a tick when the spray is used properly but they usually get vaccinated as well.

That link - for me,using brave browser, with shields up or down - now goes to a page containing nothing useful in English, but there is a link to a page, in German, on admin.ch.

I found an archive copy of the above here.

This Swissinfo page has an article dated January 2019, which states

Quote:
Ticks have become such a menace across Switzerland that the government is urging everyone to get vaccinated against one of the diseases they cause - early summer meningo-encephalitis (ESME). Health insurers will reimburse vaccination costs.
This February 2019 Swissinfo article states

Quote:
Following a recent government call for mass vaccinations against the debilitating tick-borne encephalitis disease, the health office said on Monday it considered the entire country – except cantons Geneva and Ticino – to be at risk.

Re: Tick Vaccination

A 2016 article that might be of interest.

https://newinzurich.com/2016/06/top-...n-switzerland/

This is one of the most popular sprays against ticks for people. Available in pharmacies - CHF 16.00 from memory.
