Cost of dentists in Switzerland

Do you guys know what is the normal price of teeth/dental cleaning (I think it should be Zahnsteinentfernung in German)?

I know it's expensive but it's time to do it. And do you know where is a cheap dentist in Zurich and who can do it without pain?

My last Dental hygiene visit in Zurich was 157 Fr. for the standard caries search and calculus treatment (no whitening or other fancy things). Plus 41 Fr. for two small X-rays for wisdom teeth (and also caries, I think) monitoring.

(That's a repost but I think the question is worth its own thread.)

Hello there,

100-200chf per Dental Hygiene.
Some requires some special treatments.
I would say prepare to pay 300chf in total. If this is less, then you are happy.

Can you later get refunded all these expenses incurred from the dentist i.e. x-rays cavity filling, fluoring and etc from your insurance? Or is it more advisable to do it back in your country e.g. South Africa during Christmas (if you can wait that long)? I heard one of the survivalhints from people is to do it in their home countries in Europe where it is usually cheaper but not having insurance there isn't it better do do here pay more and claim it back later? Anyone had such experience?

Dental insurance is rare in Switzerland. Dental treatment is excluded from the obligatory health insurance. Hence, expats should consider scheduling routine dental treatment in their home countries.

You can do some price comparison shopping in Switzerland. Each dental procedure has a standardized point count. Just phone and ask the dentists' receptionists what their tariff per point is. Can vary between CHF 3 and CHF 5 per point. Of course, materials are extra.

Alternatively, you may want to hop over the border to a neighboring country. German dentists advertise in Zurich trams! You know the nearest German town is less than 30 minutes drive/train from Baden.

A Q. for all Swiss here.

I have heard that dentists in Switzerland having less work and the dental school are having less future students than ever before. For my understanding it is a result of the on going prevention (cleaning).

Is it true? And please , if you can, support your answer with hard facts.
Thanks
Giora

I have no facts about Swiss dentist earnings. Their rates are not falling. Hence, they are not under pressure.

Better dental hygiene would reduce need for simple fillings, etc. However, there are significant drivers for higher dentist earnings:
  • Aging population needing dentures, etc.
  • Modern technology, e.g. expensive implants instead of simpler bridges.
  • Higher cosmetic expectations, e.g. braces, bleaching, etc.
  • More sports and automobile injuries from a more active and mobile society.
Are you planning to be a dentist?

Thanks for your answer. My inquiry is based on stories I heard that this is a new phenomena in switzerland (Dental prevention that resulted in less demand for dental treatment). I have interest in it as part of my assumption that the solution for the Health care crisis (growing cost because of new technologies) is in prevention medicine or focusing on health instead on sickness.
The unfunded amount of Medicare in the US is more than 6 times the total output of the US economy, meaning that either a solution have to be found or the US will go down in flame and may take with it the entire world....So if somebody can support/defuse this notion for me...it will be highly appreciated.

Don't worry, if Medical aid in the states goes up in smoke, the rest of the world will survive.

Hi all :)

I have a quick question regarding the costs of having dental work done in Zurich! I of course assume its not cheap...

My (non-swiss) dentist tells me I need fixed braces for a period of around 2.5 - 3 years. Would any of you happen to have an idea of the costs I can expect if I have this work done in Switzerland? Maybe some of you have friends/kids who had similar work done..

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

From what I have heard it will put you back 10'000 CHF give or take a couple of thousands. Depends on the starting point. I will have an estimate for my daughter in February, I'm not looking forward to it
