Dental veneer cosmetic surgery... anyone had them (in CH or otherwise)?

While my teeth could not be considered "bad", I have never been overjoyed with them and have stained them heavily during my years of wine, tea, coffee and smoking. Also I wouldn't say I have the best photo smile in existence. I tried whitening in the past with limited results so am now considering some cosmetic dental surgery options for more long-term results.

What I would like to know is:
  1. Has anyone else here had it or is considering it?
  2. Where did you get it done?
  3. How was the cost?
  4. Positives and negatives?

PS: I am of course also researching all of the above online and have read several articles on the pluses and minuses as well as seen various options in Eastern Europe etc, but am interested to get direct feedback form members here (if at all anyone has had it done or is also considering to get it done.

Cheers,

Rich.

Yes, I had it done to my 6 front upper teeth about 20 years ago.

Where did you get it done?
California and India.

How was the cost?
~2000.00 USD 20 years ago in California for 6 teeth. 14,000 rupies (~200 CHFs) for replacement of 1 veneer

Positives and negatives?
Positives: Improved my smile (spaces, discoloration, etc.,..) greatly.

Negatives: Make sure you find a good dentist to perform it.

When I did it initially, my lower teeth would touch the back of the veneers very slightly. I didn't really notice it but after a few years, the harder porcelain ground down the enamel on the lower teeth creating smooth, flat surfaces. I talked to my then current dentist about it and he recommended that I get braces to fix the existing bite issues that should have been dealt with prior to the veneers. I then did Invisalign (~5000 USD) for a year or so to correct the alignment issues. In retrospect, I should have went straight to the Invisalign and the whole veneer business probably would not have been necessary in my case.

If you have any alignment, space issues, etc.,.. I would recommend you get that fixed first. If you don't, then I think that the veneers are good option. When I first got them done, I was told that they would last for about 10 years before some work would need to get done again. Out of my 6, I only had a problem with one in 20 years: cracked after 4 years (repaired with epoxy), cracked again after 10 years (repaired with epoxy), cracked again last year into multiple pieces that was irreparable.

This final crack happened about 10 days before I went to India for holiday. I talked to my dentist here, and found out that the starting cost would be 1200 CHFs to replace that ONE veneer and they would not be able to get it fixed before my trip (you need to get your tooth prepped, a mold made and the veneer takes at least a week to get built before it can get attached). I found a "reputable" looking dentist in New Delhi and booked an appointment for the 1st day after arrival. First impressions of the office and staff were good (nothing like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR8tIjTykbE) so I went for it. They prepped my tooth, made a mold and gave me a temporary crown to wear while traveling around. I went back to the office 2.5 weeks later, got my new veneer installed, paid my ~200 CHFs and was on my way. For any future work I need, I will definitely head back.

Re: Dental veneer cosmetic surgery... anyone had them (in CH or otherwise)?

I am not sure that veneers are recommended unless you've quit smoking.

But anyway, I recommend cosmodent at the hauptbahnhof if you're more interested in excellent service and advice, but not looking for a cheap option.

I don't have time to travel and stuff around with finding a cheaper dentist. I prefer to have someone local and spread the cost out over time, when it's convenient to me...

Re: Dental veneer cosmetic surgery... anyone had them (in CH or otherwise)?

I highly recommend Dr Eberbach at Zahnarztzentrum in Winterthur for this kind of thing. There is no hard sell, he explains the options carefully and the standard of care is very good. I did not have anything invasive done. I had braces for straightening, and then cleaning. Doing it that way takes awhile but I would really avoid more invasive techniques unless there are no other options. Wearing braces as an adult is a little weird at first but you get used to it very quickly. For me it was a good experience and I would highly recommend him for any work of this nature.

Re: Dental veneer cosmetic surgery... anyone had them (in CH or otherwise)?

Hubs is undergoing this right now in Lausanne, don't know where, but I will find out. He had an old crown on a front tooth that had slipped over the course of 40 years. And the other seven top front teeth were crooked and discolored.

The dentist is in the process of veneering all 8 top front teeth. It seems, to me, to be taking a very long time. He has been to see the dentist at least 5 times over the last three months and they are still not done.

I don't know whether this is normal, whether this is because of the one crown in the front, or whether this dentist is just slow. My husband seems to think this guy is good and is just very thorough.

We have dental insurance so we are not paying for this, but I can find out how much it all costs and repost it on here. Mind you, it will be a lot because of the crown which added extra costs.

How do you get dental insurance to avoid paying for all of this? Is that common?

Indeed, as far as I am aware insurance only pay if it is for genuine medical reasons? Usually cosmetic is not covered.

Still, very nice outcome ( as long as the dentist does a decent job in the end)!

No, it is quite uncommon. My husband is one of those old dinosaurs with those golden ex-pat contracts. His giant, multinational company has global insurance that covers dental, drugs and medical. (All of our claims are administered by Cigna International, but, in reality, his company is self-insured.)

However, I think that in this instance, it is not cosmetic because his front tooth was a crown, i.e. there was really no tooth underneath there at all. Maybe some of it is cosmetic, but there is also a medical issue because the crown was falling off and there is some gum loss and it was also killing the other front tooth next to it.

In a nutshell, it was gross.

Re: Dental veneer cosmetic surgery... anyone had them (in CH or otherwise)?

I had my front 6 teeth veneered about 20 years ago. They were great for the first 10 years, but have gradually deteriorated. I had them done in Germany, for about 3,000 Euros at the time. The dentist I see here says he thinks it would be better to replace them with crowns - he's a young guy but doesn't seem to think veneers are ever a good choice. I would love to get them all fixed with crowns - and a couple really need doing soon - but don't want to pay Swiss prices, so a bit stuck at the moment.

Re: Dental veneer cosmetic surgery... anyone had them (in CH or otherwise)?

I had veneers put on my front four top teeth back in 1994 to cover the chips caused by an accident in time for my wedding. All the work was done by usual dentist for a total of approx. £480.

Later on, in 2009, I joined a new dental practice close to my work in Manchester. My new dentist was the genius Dr. Lance Knight, who had lots of celeb patients but still took NHS patients too. I'd still say he's one of the best cosmetic dentists around, but I'm not sure where he's based now. If you look at Google photos of Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays, Lance Knight is the guy who fixed his teeth.

Quite a lot of travelling for a thing you can do in Austria for a third or less from what would cost you in Switzerland. I'm not even saying Hungary or Czech R. etc. because you don't always hear of satisfied customers.
I don't have and don't plan but a friend of mine has done it in Austria and it was very OK - quality and costs.

My only "problem" with this veneer treatment that I've seen many people have - is that it looks a bit....too perfect. When it's really needed due to various causes it's OK, otherwise...meh. But of course, de gustibus and all that.
And Richdog, whitening should work if it's done correctly. My DH was talking about how difficult it was to whiten her brother's teeth but she did it in two sessions and there are no problems now. Also, after the initial treatment you always have to do it periodically. This bit I know from OH...I'm a bit ashamed to say I have white teeth all au naturel.

This, absolutely. Find a good orhtodontist first.

Richdog, husband is home and tells me that it was only his four front teeth. It was about 4000 chf, or about 1000 chf per tooth. It took 2.5 months but that was because his temporary set broke and that caused a set back.

He LOVED his dentist, Dr. Tomas, who works here: https://www.hygienedentairelausanne.ch/en/

He highly recommends.

Re: Dental veneer cosmetic surgery... anyone had them (in CH or otherwise)?

Rich,

As a Prosthodontist specialist I do a lot of reconstruction dentistry cases in our practice in Cham. For best results I typically use a combination of Invisalign and veneers. The purpose of doing Invisalign first is to align the teeth and avoid periodontal problems down the line. The veneers then go onto your teeth to hide any spots, chipping or other cosmetic imperfections you may have on your teeth.

The biggest issue with reconstructive dentistry is that the patient only sees the result at the end. What if the patient does not like the result then, after all that work is already done? To solve this issue, I started offering the Digital Smile Design procedure - basically a series of extra-and-intra oral photos/pictures before the procedure and then simulation of the treatment's end result/look. Normally we can offer at least two treatment paths that lead to the desired outcome. All treatment options are reviewed with the patient; it is an extra 400 CHF investment, but removes any unwanted surprises & disappointments from the procedures - i.e. the patient knows what to expect before the treatment is started.

Sincerely,
Dr. Ianev
