Unmarried EU parents - questions for paternity ack and baby name

Hi all,

I've read almost every thread and I just want to make sure I got this right.

Both parents are EU, non-Swiss, B permit holders. Baby is on the way and they don't want to get married yet (marriage penalty and all). Father wants to acknowledge paternity as soon as possible so plans a local visit to the Civil Register office with the missus. If I understand correctly, as non-Swiss and unmarried we can pick any of our surnames for the baby.

Questions

1) Do I inform the Civil Register office at the same time as I acknowledge paternity that I want the baby to have father's last name or is this a separate process?
2) Do they ask for documentation from origin country that I am not married? Translated with Hague and all? That's a bitch to get and might take some time, would be great if not needed.
3) What is the very latest point in time that we must pick a first name for the baby? I know I need to pre-order health insurance before birth to cover all corners, do they need a first name at the time of ordering the insurance or do I have some extra time after birth?
4) I am unsure aside from the paternity recognition, if I need to do a joint declaration with my partner that we pan to raise it together. Is this the same process as my first question and all done together?

Thanks in advance for all replies

Re: Unmarried EU parents - questions for paternity ack and baby name

Me and my partner are unmarried EU citizens and at the time the kid was born we had permit B.
I called the register office and explain that we want our baby to have father surname . They sent us a file to fill up with list of documents we need to give them.
As for paternity recognition they gave us an appointment to come and sign a papers. We couldnít come cos baby decided to come earlier and first birth certificate came with my surname on it. At the meeting at registrar office it was changed to father surname.
Papers I donít remember what we needed but I had to get from polish consulate paper stating that Iím not married, same for my partner from British. I needed also my birth certificate with apostille. What else I donít know, it was 6 years ago.

Re: Unmarried EU parents - questions for paternity ack and baby name

Interesting question.

In all the cases that I know, if unmarried they got the mother's surname, though all of these cases included one Swiss parent (but not always the mother).

Also, in some cases the father recognized the paternity somtime (even a year) later.

If the child gets the mothers surname, but later the parents marry, the child will get the father's surname (old law, now upon marriage you can select the childrens' surname, BUT ALL CHILDREN GET THE SAME SURNAME!) This can happen if the parents marry 30+ years later! (I personally know some people that this happened to, their 33 year old daughter was NOT amused! )
