Swiss Baby Gift Idea

One of my best girlfriends just had her first baby (a little boy!)! I wanted to send something to her that is 'Swiss'. What is a typical Swiss baby gift? I was planning on sending a onesie with the Swiss flag and my French teacher suggested sending a stuffed cow. I'll be mailing it to the States, so the lighter the better, but I'm also realistic.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Re: Swiss Baby Gift Idea

The last thing I needed was another onesie. The cow idea can work, but something that has always seemed very Swiss to me are the small carved wooden ones. There are other farm animals and the big mountain dogs in the same style. Maybe a small selection of wooden figures? The concept of wooden farm toys, doll houses, and figures seems to be very popular here.

The Schweizer Heimatwerk stores are where I first saw them https://www.heimatwerk.ch/en/

And I remember Pastorini having a good gift suitable toy selection in general https://pastorini.ch/de/home

Something like this:

Re: Swiss Baby Gift Idea

Thank you! I prefer the wooden cows because that might be something he could keep on his dresser or in a cabinet for years. I feel like babies get so many stuffed animals throughout their life that a stuffed one might just be "another one".

I think I'll go with a wooden cow. It wouldnt be weird or odd sending that to a new born though, right?

A wooden cow and a onesie would be nice. Just get a bigger size onesie (6 months or bigger) and not a newborn one.
Heidi in town has nice Swiss onesies and baby t shirts.

Tigerfinkli is also VERY Swiss. Every child had some when I was a child and I loved them! Maybe better to bring them when you see her next because I would buy bigger ones for when he can already walk. https://www.tiger.swiss

Re: Swiss Baby Gift Idea

I thought about the new-born aspect and what you say is likely true. Ours ended up with so many stuffed animals in his first year that I couldn't keep track of where they all came from. There are only a select few that have been memorable enough to keep.

To me, the wooden cow is something that a baby could "grow" with. It can sit on a shelf or nightstand for now, but has a good back story and can serve as the basis for many questions and answers as the child gets older. It's also easy to ship and not break.

For a more infant oriented Swiss gift, there is something that has to do with a teething giraffe I think. Unfortunately, I don't know the details behind that one. I just know many Swiss people seem to talk about them.

I think the giraffe is this one:

There's another version without the rings, but the one with rings might be easier for the child to hold while chewing.

Re: Swiss Baby Gift Idea

Thank you, everyone! I think I am going to go with the wooden cow and a "dummy clip." I'm not a huge fan of getting actual newborn size anything for people - whether that be clothes or diapers. They grow too fast!!

I'll check out the Heidi store this weekend and find something there in addition to the other two things.

I'm excited to send over a little part of Switzerland - oh and some chocolates for the new Mom!
