Childcare Costs in Zurich

Hello all, firstly I hope I don't get slated on the forum for asking this!

I've been trawling the forum for ideas about childcare costs. We live in the UK and I might be offered a position in Zurich. So we're trying to do some maths for childcare costs. Our daughter is 2 years old.

From what I've seen on the forums, it looks like at the age of 2 till 4, we'll just have to find full-time daycare. We're both going to be working. And that's going to be like CHF120-150 per day? So for a 22-day month, that's a top-end figure of over CHF3,000 per month.

The offer I am expecting will conservatively be in the CHF125000 region, which should give me a take-home of about CHF8500. But taking CHF3000 out of it per month means we're probably not going to save much money at the end of it, or we'll need to compromise on lifestyle. In short, my primary reason for moving to Switzerland is now looking like a non-starter.

Am I being pessimistic about cost of living with a child with those kinds of daycare costs? Or did I miss something somewhere? Thank you!

Welcome to the Forum. If you don't want a typical daycare you can look into a Tagesmutter, which I think can be a bit more affordable.

Hi

Childcare costs plus extras (there are always extras) are eye-watering indeed. It obviously depends on lifestyle choices but based on my experience you may find that a big tight, if course ymmv. If your partner is also working that does indeed swell the coffers, if not, the stay at home "option " for one of you becomes the only option.

BTW, no DBS-equivalent checks in CH and in the establishments I visited, no overt posting of staff qualifications etc., no mandatory minimums for adult:child ratios.

Also don't forget your mandatory health insurance which for the three of you will be around 700chf per month.

You mention that you’ll both be working so spreading the cost won’t be as bad as if it was just coming out of your wage.

Yes, it’s expensive but it’s a consequence of low taxes - it’s not a subsidised service unless you are on a low income.

To add to the suggestion of a Tagesmutter, you could also just look for single language day care as the bilingual ones tend to be more pricey.

Don't let the pessimists scare you too much. If you don't require fancy childcare (something advertising bilingualism or a special curriculum), for a 2 year old five days a week you could get away with paying around 2100. Just don't hope to live in a trendy neighborhood. If you have two incones you should be fine.

As far as savings potential is concerned, i guess it's about how you like to spend your money. You won't be rich, but you can still save.

Re: Childcare Costs in Zurich

3.000,- for 2 kids in Zürich is very optimistic.

Edit: To add: If one is working the other one can take care of the kids, if both are working you can pay for daycare and that is how simple life here is.

Not entirely true, depends on Canton. Here in VD there are indeed rules on number of children to adults ratio which varies by age range of the children. There are also minimum qualifications for the staff in respect of age /number of children on the premises.

For OP, for full time childcare expect 2,500-3,000 per month. If both are working, then this is more than manageable. And on the bright side, your child is already 2, so only 2 more years needed.
