Elective C-Section on Basic Insurance... Advice

Hi moms...

I need some advice PLEASE. I have just moved to GVA. Hubby and I plan on trying this year. Private health insurance won't count as there is a 1 year waiting period.... And therefore the basic insurance benefits will only apply.

I do not want a natural birth, I want to have a CS [Please no bashing or judging]. My question is- Will the basic health insurance cover an elective CS?

Thanks in advance

Probably not, why should they pay for something that is not necessary, you could always pay yourself rather than the assurance paid by all of us.

One of the best things about Swiss medical insurance is that 'tiers' only apply to things like how many people are in your room... not the 'quality' of the care... you can't pay higher premiums and get 'better' care. (Well, not for the vast majority of policies.. I'm sure the uber rich are on different plans)

Your insurance will pay for whatever the medical expert says is necessary.

p.s. not a mom

Well if you're only now thinking about trying there's a pretty strong chance you won't reach the production end of the process until after a year has passed.

But do please rethink your decision. There are strong downsides to CS as well.

Ethics and rights and wrongs aside..

If the OP feels so strong about it then there's a good chance that the doctor would sign it off as necessary, psychologically.

OP, as the others said, you can always pay the difference between what your insurer covers and what exactly you want, the sky is the limit.

I'm neither a doctor nor a woman.. But I wonder financially what would be the difference .. 20hours of screaming and pushing vs 20mins to open the sun roof and be done.

Talk to your doctor about it. When my Wife was pregnant she was given the option and said that if my wife has anxiety about a natural birth then she will put that in the notes and recommend a C section and it wouldn't be a problem.

The Wife decided on a natural birth in the end and all went well.

Take a look here:

It seems to say that some do/ some don't, so opt for the lowest deductable just in case.

Your preferences are your own business.

It also depends on your own physician, so having an ob/gyn from the outset is probably useful.

We pay for a lot of things that are not necessary, indirectly through health insurances or taxes. I would love to stop my money going to finance certain things or people, but I can't. This is among the last things we should be concerned about. A natural birth is not for free either.

Sorry, probably not helpful but I'm not bashing or judging...

I was squit-scared of a natural birth when I was pregnant (hyper-ventilating at the thought - OMG! All of that baby coming out of that tiny hole!!) but I had a great doctor and she guided me through a natural birth with all the pain relief and encouragement I could have wished for. Yes, it's messy and it hurts and you have an angry vagina for a while afterwards but the recovery time is loads shorter and the risk of complications much reduced, plus the baby seems to benefit bacteria-wise more from being crammed face-first through your nether-regions.

Enjoy your lunch.

Yes it will be covered. You don’t need to choose a low deductable as you don’t pay ZERO NADA out of the deductible from 14 weeks pregnant to 8 weeks after birth.

Have a look at this thread where this was discussed (and ignore the judgemental comments)

That doesn’t make any sense, if something is not covered, it is not covered and you pay for it 100%. The deductible would be irrelevant. But as mentioned by others and discussed in the thread above it will be covered. FYI from that thread the difference between uncomplicated vaginal and planned CS is in the range of 4K.
