Contraceptive Implant

Good day, I am a 27year old married to a swiss, living in Canada. We recently had our second baby girl and for the first time I am looking into a long term contraceptive. In Canada the most common is an IUD. I have always been paranoid of these as I personally know three babies conceived with an IUD and know many people with horror stories about pain, bleeding, perforation of uterus, etc. In my research I found some info about an implant that goes in your arm and lasts 3-5 years that is progesterone only in a low dose.this method seems like an ideal contraceptive with few side effects and a very high efficiency. These are not available in Canada at all and after researching I found would cost me about 1600 to get done in the USA. I was wondering if anyone had personal experience with this method. Also if anyone knows how much to get it in Switzerland, we will hopefully be coming this summer. And any English speaking gynos in either Basel or Aargau. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Contraceptive Implant

I see you live in Canada, so I donít know how it would work if you were a visitor to Switzerland, but I can tell you my recent experience. Would be worth calling a few gynae clinics to ask questions.

Implanon NXT or Nexplanon are not covered (like most birth control) by Swiss health insurance, so itís paid directly out of pocket. I had mine put in recently and the total cost was 500 chf.

I had a long discussion with the doctor about options and I think it is very important to choose something that is both best best for you and your medical provider. These do have risks so if you have it inserted outside of Canada, I would also discuss this with your doctor there to make sure it can be checked and removed there in case of complications.

I can say that Iím really happy with it and so are a few of my friends who also have the implant. I had an IUD previously and I much prefer this.

Hopefully you find the best option for you

Thank you for your response. Itís very helpful. I do plan on talking to my Canadian doctor before I come as well as trying to get in touch with a few gynos in Switzerland to see if they would do the procedure on an out of country patient. I just wanted a quick bit of I do to see if it was even worth putting in the effort. There are very few places around that I can find that can take it out I think which is definitely something to think about. Itís great to hear that you like it better than an IUD.

Suggest to your partner that he has a vasectomy. Much simpler, and readily available in most countries.

Providing you keep the same partner........

A copper IUD is around Chf 450--- for implant and a hormonal one is around Chf 750.-- from recollection about 6 years ago.

Hormonal is similar to taking the pill with regards the hormones, periods are usually very quick, a copper one means no messing around with hormones but periodss can be heavier and last longer.

Re: Contraceptive Implant

Have you checked into the Depro Provera shot? It's not an implant but an injection you get every three months.
