Knee MRI cost??

Hi everyone!!

My boyfriend had knee surgery 5 years ago, we went on holiday and he jumped and really damaged it, we went to A&E and did an Xray and said that if it still hurting after a few days he should get an MRI.
We've never been to the doctor in Switzerland and I was wondering if anyone had an MRI experience and can share how much it cost them. I'd really appreciate it! (we live in Zurich)

I know we have to go through GP to have it done and we have insurance of 2.500.-

Thank you very much!! 😊😊

Re: Knee MRI cost??

Sounds like an accident? So probably not subject to the 2500 deductible and covered by accident insurance..? The visit to A&E would have been covered by same no?

A&E was in Greece, which was free as we have the European insurance card.

We're back in Zurich and just wanted to hear from people that had to get an MRI how much it cost them

Re: Knee MRI cost??

And probably covered by your accident insurance, as already mentioned. Check it out, no cost to you if covered by that

MRI could be a lot more, I paid 500 for a CT scan at HUG 2 years ago with an additional 250 for the Dr etc.. 1250 euro for a CT scan in Malta similar price in London.

Re: Knee MRI cost??

Mine was 7 or 800. To be an accident it usually has to be a result of an accident of some kind, like if you slipped down some loose gravel and twisted it. Jumping off a rock and the knee giving way isn't an accident.

The figures are right. I regularly have knee mriís and itís around that. I donít now exactly because I run it the other way, I have minimal deductible knowing I always get these done.

Yes it is. It doesn't matter if an accident is a result of carelessness of even recklessness, it will still be covered by accident insurance.

Re: Knee MRI cost??

Had one done two weeks ago, in SZ.

I don't have the bill yet, but the off-the-cuff estimate was ca 500-600. Add to that the doctor's time to review and write the report.

If I get the final bill in anything approaching a timely fashion I'll update this post.

that's not entirely correct. coverage may be reduced if the risk is too high.

Re: Knee MRI cost??

On the accident insurance question, if a bad/sideways landing caused an injury, that is normally an accident, covered by your accident coverage. If your boyfriend is sufficiently employed in Switzerland (50%+, I believe) then his employer is required to provide this insurance and there should not be any franchise/deductible, nor need to go through a GP for a referral.

On the other hand, if the problem was fundamentally caused by a pre-existing condition, or if it was otherwise simple weakness rather than an 'unexpected external event', then the accident insurance company might reasonably claim that it should be covered by your health plan. I believe that the two companies would then have to work it out, possibly by asking your boyfriend questions. To the extent that it was declared to be a health insurance problem, you would need to pay according to the franchise that you chose with your health plan.

Also note that even if it is a health insurance type of case, and your health insurance requires you to get a referral through a GP, you can still push for a orthopedic clinic that you feel comfortable with. For a re-injury, I'd consider pushing for something of an orthopedic center, e.g., Balgrist would be my choice for anything particularly tricky.
