Tele Med vs Going to the doc

What's your experience with going Tele Med model vs the model of just going straight to the doctors? Our broker in work recommends it.

Is there any advantage other than pure cost saving?

Do they tell you anything more than google could tell you if you call in saying you have a cold and a cough?
They can issue a prescription? Or they simply tell you to go to the doctor? Repeat prescription even?
Will they refer to a specialist without first telling you to go to the doctor?
Do they actually make an appointment for you or just tell you to go do it yourself?
Is it pure voice call, no video? Like what if you have a rash or bump etc?

It seems like a pointless extra step in most cases?

Time and effort. You talk on phone from your home to a qualified doctor.

Do they tell you anything more than google could tell you if you call in saying you have a cold and a cough?

They are medical professionals, but you can be sure if there is any doubt, they would want someone to look in perosn.

They issue prescription and can send it directly to a pharmacy near you for collection.

Will they refer to a specialist without first telling you to go to the doctor?

Yes, they can and do.

Do they actually make an appointment for you or just tell you to go do it yourself?
Both, depends on your service level and contracts. You may want to go to your preferred specialist.

Is it pure voice call, no video? Like what if you have a rash or bump etc?
Ours has an app as the staring point for member details and appointment etc and there you can send pics. I believe you can even do a video call. I have not tried that.

It seems like a pointless extra step in most cases?

YMMV. I am quite happy. Its actually bit more expensive for us to be on TelMed than a house-doctor-first setup, but it suits us.

Thank you for the helpful answer!

Indeed on further discussion today I discovered that this model is slightly more expensive for me too.. But I kinda like the sound of it.. For the convenience for simple-ish things ..

Re: Tele Med vs Going to the doc

I was on TeleMed for a couple of years, but found it a waste of time. I have a chronic condition (diabetes) and obviously need to consult my diabetologist every few months, but before doing so had to call TeleMed and waste 10 minutes replying to the same questions they had asked a few months previously. I really don't see how it saved anyone money.
My own 2 cents on TeleMed, why not if you never or only rarely go to the doctor and don't really have a GP. If you have a chronic condition of any kind, I would say it's a waste of time as they're not going to help you.
