It doesn't seem to be that common now. AFAIK.
It's largely fallen out of favour now, but I was the only girl in my class at school who didn't have pierced ears. Of my friends, it's mainly the ones of Indian descent who've got their daughters' ears pierced.

Re: Ear piercing for babies

The OP is from Cameroon where it is customary to pierce the ears of newborns. Medical advice is to not do it. Too much risk of infection. The problem is that if they can't find a professional, they may get a non-professional or do it themselves, which carries even greater risk.

Re: Ear piercing for babies

Hi all,

My partner and I are quite into the piercing scene and I think it is about time our son joined us.

We don't want anything too obvious or showy, so we decided a Prince Albert is the way to go.

There are many crazy parents who do this when a kid is 4 or 5, we've avoided that, but now that he's 8, it is about the right time I think.

Does anyone know a good artist who could do this?

Don't be silly. That's illegal in the UK nevermind Switzerland. Same goes for tattoos. Strange how this is such a divisive issue just because it's a different cultural 'norm'.

Who cares. And what is it with the <<it also once was custom to chop people apart with an axe on the marketsquare.>>?! Seriously!

OP did not ask "how do you feel if I ....." but where it could be done.
Unfortunately I can't answer that, I'd ask the paediatrician I guess. Tom, where is it done in Italy?

Done in Peru as well. The advice waiting for the vaccinations being done sounds good to me.
Loads of OP's never ask for our opinion, yet plenty of us are not ashamed to give it. Something which is allowed and very custom to do on public fora.

That you don't like my opinion does not change that, and feel free to disagree as much as you please, it is a freedom you have.

Tattoo's have a minimum age limit, ear piercings don't.

Honestly, what is happening with this forum? The OP asks a question, probably with regard to something their culture does as the norm, and nearly everyone makes a joke about it or gets on their high horse. You don't have to reply to a post you know.

Quite right - all body piercings should be at the sole discretion of parents until the child turns 18.

It's culturally acceptable not to have the MMR vaccine in Switzerland (at least amongst a subset of the population).

If someone asks for a homeopathic 'equivalent' to the MMR, should we not discuss that too?

Seriously, dress the baby in pretty clothes if it pleases the parents but making holes in it for the pleasure of the parents....

Let's just be thankful that people did not come up with the idea that it is gods will to amputate an arm or poke out an eye...

Re: Ear piercing for babies

Anyone know where I can get some of these in in Zurich for one of my kids?

No silly comments please because culturally, where I come from it's the norm.

You want help finding someone to do that for your kids?

You've got a brass neck.

Re: Ear piercing for babies

Not wishing to stoke the fire and, no, I personally wouldn't get a tiny baby's ears pierced, BUT, is it really on a par with tattooing, circumcision, amputation and the other slightly mad comparisons?

Go out onto the street and literally HUNDREDS of people have visible (and probably non-visible) piercings. Yes, presumably most had them done when they were old enough to eat solids and do their own shoelaces but the custom of having your ears pierced isn't THAT big a deal in most societies.

Just to be clear, I'm NOT condoning piercing the ears of a newborn just questioning the rather off-balance comparisons.
