Re: Ear piercing for babies

We had our daughter's ears pierced when she was a few months old. She did not appear to notice that it happened. It was quick and both ears were pierced at same time.

It was done at Claire's Accessories in the UK. Maybe OP has a Claire's nearby?

We cleaned her ears three times a day and turned the earrings at the same time. She never played with her ears, nor did they become infected.

She likes wearing earrings and can change her mind whenever she wants.

How did they get those over her head?

Tom
Of course those rings don't get over the head.
They do it from below.

Don't be silly. That's illegal in the UK nevermind Switzerland. Same goes for tattoos. Strange how this is such a divisive issue just because it's a different cultural 'norm'.
Because it‘s GBH?

Not to mention that earrings pose serious risk for a child (forgetting about the infection, GBH, and risk of an earring being pulled out through the lobe while playing)

Honestly, what is happening with this forum? The OP asks a question, probably with regard to something their culture does as the norm, and nearly everyone makes a joke about it or gets on their high horse. You don't have to reply to a post you know.
No, that‘s right.

But responding in a perfectly natural way as a parent (of any nationality, with any cultural values) doesn‘t correspond to your highnesses „getting on a high horse comment“

(That was in reference to a Prince Albert for an 8-year-old).

Only in Wales, I think. The rest of the UK is a bit slow to catch on.

Tattoo's have a minimum age limit, ear piercings don't.
You know that a Prince Albert is, literally, a long way from an ear piercing... don't you?

Given that a friend of mine earned his living with placing piercings, and some of my friends actually have prince Alberts. I'd say I know the difference.

You must have left the Netherlands long ago if "Prince Albert" is something new to you.

Better to get it done by a professional, than your kid's 8 year old friend with an ice-cube and a needle.

Anyone know where I can get some of these in in Zurich for one of my kids?

No silly comments please because culturally, where I come from it's the norm.

I didn't let my kids get pierced ears until they were 17. They knew I'd say no until they were 16, so when they asked, I said ok, if you wait a year and still want it, then fine. One did it, the other didn't.

What the OP wishes to do is not advisable, but it's in fact quite unlikely to cause any difficulties or malformation - and so far as we know isn't illegal in Switzerland.

Cultural differences don't (or shouldn't) define morality - unless you're a relativist in which case anything goes of course. That doesn't mean it's right to pour derision and opprobrium upon someone for whom an action is perfectly appropriate. Education and gentle guidance will probably be more effective, but probably won't make you feel so big and strong and virtuous.

Re: Ear piercing for babies

I always love the hands thrown up in horror every time piercing babies ears is mentioned. Rarely does anyone ask the opinion of those that had it done as babIes.

My ears were pierced at the age of 6 weeks. Of course, I don't remember it, but I have always been grateful that my parents took care of avoiding infections, and then bought me the most beautiful pairs of gold earrings. I still have them, and they are among my proudest possessions, a fond memory of my Dad, who has now passed away, and of how proud he was to show off his little girl.

Best to go to a piercing / tattoo place certified to use needles, not a gun. And no turning. Just clean with sterile solution and no cotton wool.

Of all my piercings (from age 12) Claire's did the worst one.
