Fine, don't trust them (I don't either). Take the confirmed cases outside of China. What is the death rate there? It's actually even lower (possibly due to better healthcare system).

Purely due to the better healthcare system and smaller amount of patients, people go in earlier here and mostly don't wait till they are ill as "hell", hospitals are more hygienic, more modern equipment and very important only a few cases so no overworked staff, no patients stacked in hallways. Each in their private room with all the attention and meds needed.

And the medical care is not to fight corona, they can't since there is no cure yet. It is to control and fight against the complications like pneumonia. If we would see an outbreak here that would completely overload our medical system the deathrate in western countries would go up quickly.

This is also why they fear the amount of deaths if this virus would go berserk in a country like India.

Anyone reserved a cruise vacation later this year? https://edition.cnn.com/2020/02/05/a...hnk/index.html

Also, I take Zero Hegde as comedy site. A few times there's a bit of satire, but not much. So, it's for the LOLs.

"Most of the coronavirus victims were over the age of 60 or suffered from other medical conditions, according to China's health authorities. Dr Li's medical history is not known."

The doc was 34. Just sayin'...

He wasn't even trying to blow a loud whistle to a large group. He only suggested to fellow doctors that they protect themselves just in case. The way the government handled it was atrocious.

Re: Coronavirus

And they're still trying to cover things up.

"Dr Li was declared dead at 21:30 local time (13:30 GMT) on Thursday, and the news was reported by Chinese state media outlets, triggering a huge wave of popular reaction on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter.

Journalists and doctors at the scene, who do not want their names used, told the BBC and other media that government officials then intervened.

Official media outlets were told to change their reports to say the doctor was still being treated.

Reports said the doctor was given a treatment known as ECMO (extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) which keeps a person's heart pumping and keeps their blood oxygenated without it going through their lungs."

Re: Coronavirus

While the flu infects and kills a lot more people, this thing here seems to cause a lot of complication in a lot of cases.

In most cases of flu, people can sleep it off at home (I assume, I've never had a serious flu/influenza).

The pneumonia-cases seem to require intubation and this causes 2ndary infections, requiring antibiotics etc.
They would qualify for ICU here - except that we don't have space in ICU for a lot patients. Nobody has.
And we can't erect a hospital from shipping containers in a fortnight.

Zerohedge does have a certain entertainment value - but sometimes they raise good points that are - IMO - at least worth discussing.
Usually, there's someone on reddit who can debunk the articles - but let's not pretend that ZeroHedge is infowars or some other shrill conspiracy site.

There are way too many open questions for just blaming this on people eating fried bats and selling live chicken on an open market.
While I'm not necessarily believing in the "Look! It has AIDS-proteins OMG!" conspiracy, the vicinity of that BSL4 lab in the very city this broke out is just too much of a coincidence for me.

I completely agree! I also have misgivings about Zero Hedge as their conspiracy theories seem to run amok on several issues. That said, the proximity of this BSL4 lab to Wuhan concerns me as well as an HIV vaccine being useful in curtailing/stemming the virus Why exactly? Something seems amiss with reports from China...

The killer flu epidemic of 1918 predominantly killed young healthy people with strong immune systems, so don't get too complacent.

not really apples to apples as this was wartime and nobody actually has any reliable statistic how many of those dead were due to the flu, complication from the flu or flu and a bullet in the chest.

Re: Coronavirus

And he's now officially dead again.

"There had been contradictory reports about his death, but the People's Daily now says he died at 02:58 on Friday (18:58 GMT Thursday)."

Oh I think you can garburko

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu

“In terms of single events causing major loss of life, it surpassed the First World War (17 million dead), the Second World War (60 million dead), and possibly both put together. It was the greatest tidal wave of death since the Black Death, perhaps in the whole of human history.” Laura Spinney, Pale Rider: The Spanish Flu of 1918 and How It Changed the World

Again, seems it probably came out of Asia/China

Earlier hypotheses put forward varying points of origin for the epidemic. Some hypothesized that the flu originated in East Asia, a common area for transmission of disease from animals to humans because of dense living conditions.[25] In 1993, Claude Hannoun, the leading expert on the 1918 flu for the Pasteur Institute, asserted the former virus was likely to have come from China. It then mutated in the United States near Boston and from there spread to Brest, France, Europe's battlefields, Europe, and the world with Allied soldiers and sailors as the main disseminators.[26] He considered several other hypotheses of origin, such as Spain, Kansas and Brest, as being possible, but not likely."

"In 2014, historian Mark Humphries argued that the mobilization of 96,000 Chinese laborers to work behind the British and French lines might have been the source of the pandemic. Humphries, of the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, based his conclusions on newly unearthed records. He found archival evidence that a respiratory illness that struck northern China in November 1917 was identified a year later by Chinese health officials as identical to the Spanish flu."

Though it seems the Chinese might be trying to cover that up as well:

"A report published in 2016 in the Journal of the Chinese Medical Association found no evidence that the 1918 virus was imported to Europe via Chinese and Southeast Asian soldiers and workers. It found evidence that the virus had been circulating in the European armies for months and possibly years before the 1918 pandemic."

Re: Coronavirus

From your link

"...analysis of medical journals from the period of the pandemic found that the viral infection was no more aggressive than previous influenza strains. Instead, malnourishment, overcrowded medical camps and hospitals, and poor hygiene promoted bacterial superinfection. This superinfection killed most of the victims, typically after a somewhat prolonged death bed..."

as I said, not really apples to apples.
