Below the train station in Lausanne the Denner had been cleaned out of toilet paper and vegetables; the Aldi in the station was normally stocked; the Coop had been cleaned out of yogurt and pasta; the Migros had been cleaned out of vegetables and chicken. Of course I did not check all the aisles, I was just trying to do my Saturday shopping.

I guess people are trying to reduce the frequency they shop at, which is rational...
That is why, as soon as I heard rumors about Tessino getting locked down, I went to do all my shopping because I knew that it will hit us eventually. I can now easily survive for 4 weeks . I also have the luxury to be able to switch my sleep-cycle and I'll be on nocturnal mode, so that I can avoid as much direct human contact as possible.

PPPP - Preparation Prevents Possible Problems (an old Army adage)

Required coverage = 1-1/R0.
Seems low, doesn't it? Early estimates of COVID-19 R0 is between 2 and 2.5. That means that coverage needed would be 60%.

More problematic for me, I couldn’t get any delactosed milk anywhere, and there are three of us lactose intolerant in the family.
Going to Pontarlier on Monday- there are 2 bio supermarkets, and will also go to HyperU- do you want me to look out for some? Coming to visit my brother in the region mid week- could deliver if I find any?

It all depends on the R0 value. Required coverage = 1-1/R0. Measles has an R0 of 20 therefore requires 95% coverage. 98% requirement implies an R0 of 50 - no disease has that.

Covid is estimated at R0 = 2.5 which means you need 60% of the population to be immune.

He was using MMR as a reference actually, so that fits together.

That’s nice of you! We still have two litres at home. I’ll restrict myself and leave it for my two children (the eldest is not intolerant), and I hope shops will restock soon. Considering I’m a teacher and thus at home until further notice, I have time to pop in stores to check their arrivals!

I'm sure they would offer very competitive prices, but as I did not take this into account in time my pantry is already stocked with all the pangolins, bats and civets I should need for the next few weeks.

Maybe try calling first, or check the stock online? I don't mean to criticize you, but we all need to take 'social distancing' seriously and stay at home whenever possible.

That said, i just made what i hope to be my last big shop. I was trying to weigh the risk of exposure today vs the risk of exposure in the future, along with potential rising food prices, broken supply chains, and the fact that the pandemic is only just beginning and we could have a rough 6 months ahead of us. So i decided to take the risk.

People are still standing right next to each other, no masks, gloves, goggles, no cart handles being wiped, etc. Of course i wasn't wearing mask, gloves, or goggles either - even though its likely a good idea right now. Nobody wants to be 'that guy'.

Re: Coronavirus

Meat in all 4 local supermarkets (Aldi, Denner, Migros, Coop - and the two last ones aren't small stores) gone or only stuff no one would ever buy (Agio, Kutteln..) left. Pasta completely gone, even the more expensive ones. Cans? Hardly much left, albeit Coop and Migros still had some varieties left in small amounts. Frozen foods? All frozen veggies totally gone everywhere, some pizza left at Migros and Coop. Obviously no fresh veggies but Kohlrabi in any of the 4 stores. Talking 2-3pm

They can say there is no need to Hamstern and everything is alright, but if can't buy anything because everyone else does so...

Similar to a bank run, I guess..

Easy. Apparently most of those who had recovered from COVID-19 have now succumbed to it again. Very poor graphical representation.

Re: Coronavirus

I shopped yesterday evening at the Hieber's in Binzen, D, near Basel. I chose that store because it's relatively small and a little distant from large population areas.

Just about everything was available; plenty of veges, meat (some on special; 40% off!), fish, poultry, canned everything, bread. Just no toilet paper, and almost no kitchen towel, although this being Hieber's, they had a few rolls of bamboo-paper kitchen rolls at €20 each.

Oh, and I couldn't find the fajita kits. Full crisis mode.

Considering China is about the safest place on Earth from Coronavirus right now, that must qualify as the most silly post in this thread. Lian Hua in ZRH is business as usual, if not more busy.

Could you perhaps try ordering it from leshop (Migros online with home delivery) or coopathome (Coop ditto)? You may have to wait a few days to get a delivery slot, but the plus side is you could order 20 litres or so, if you select UHT.
