Re: Coronavirus

German research has found that around roomtemperature the virus can survive on surfaces touched by infected people pretty long and for 4 to 5 days can infect other people that touch the same surfaces.

It just gets worse and worse.

This will disrupt a lot of supply chains in the coming weeks.

Be prepared for everything, to get more pricey and some things just not being available.
This is a very good point. Tesla shares have plummeted in recent days due to the interruption to their supply chains. I wonder if this could be the trigger to a global recession? So much stuff is sourced from China. Time to start selling ones shares and start buying Swiss Francs?

And they had flown recently to Europe from Singapore on an Airbus A380, God knows how many people could be infected from the flight alone. Not panicking yet, but have ordered a couple of boxes of surgical masks out of prudence.

Re: Coronavirus

I'm pretty sure there is nothing in your household that hasn't at some point touched something Made in China, even if the thing itself is not assembled in China, a lot of raw materials likely are.

The global supply-chain is very long and very complex.

Companies that rely on China-sourced products in their supply-chain know that there is no output during the Chinese New Year and that output immediately after that is often of lower quality, so they stock up beforehand. Those stocks are going to be depleted soon.

If it ended now, it would still take weeks to correct everything. But China is adding more people to the quarantine every day and the only reason they aren't officially reporting more cases is that they can only test a fixed number of cases per day.

On-the-ground reports from China are terrifying.

As for preparing, there's this:

https://www.ready.gov/food

plus surface disinfectant.

I said to a co-worker that if this thing didn't come out of a lab, it was sent by God himself. And I was only half-joking.

Where did you source this information? I can't find anything about that, only that one of the party recently flew from Singapore, but nothing about the exact route or aircraft.

Re: Coronavirus

My co-worker has a Chinese wife.
Besides staying on WeChat the whole day, she's trying to make a quick buck by sourcing face-masks and shipping them to China.
She's only met scammers so far, though...

I've usually got enough dried goods and canned tomatoes anyway, so I haven't gone into full-on hoarding mode (don't have space anyway).

Plus, I don't live in the city. I could work from home.

There is no reason to panic - but there's also absolute no reason to pretend that all's peachy and the "problem" will stay confined to China's megacities and things will resume to normal shortly.

ZH and Reddit, probably....

I'm not worried about single events or single flights. That's ridiculous.

The first cases in Wuhan happened in December, five million people alone left the city for the Lunar New Year.

Re: Coronavirus

I just ordered some masks from hornbach online after seeing that they are all sold out from physical hornbach locations in the area. Ill use them for sanding stuff eventually anyway, even if the plague peters out soon. I also did a big shop for staple stuff to store in the cellar.

Yes right. All eye contact should be avoided. Wear sun glasses.

As far as I know they still carry out their cargo flights, they just lost a lot of belly capacity due to the loss of the passenger flights. Companies like DHL, UPS and FedEx are jumping into this for them golden opportunity to take over a lot of this business for the time being.

A box of 50 surgical masks costs 30 bucks at the moment, a small price to pay for peace of mind. Worst case I’ve got my Halloween costumes sorted for the next 10 years!

Re: Coronavirus

I still don't get the hysteria ..

China has a population of 1.4bn
35k cases reported (34.3k simply recovered)
730 deaths

I know it's a new strain but it's catching the cold. Is it really the apocalypse ?
