The Vth Hospital Battalion was mobilised this weekend, so something is beginning in this direction. Of course the Swiss army could be tasked with doing the testing, their NBC kit is perfectly up to the task. The problem is the political will to use it, and the fact that it means calling up reservists, which will raise leftwing hackles as well as those of the business lobby.
My son is doing his military recruitment in the hospital corps Aufnahme (Admissions I guess). Their function under normal circumstances is emergency life saving first aid. Their programme seems to have been stepped up and his troop is being kept away from the rest of the barracks. They also have to maintain a 2 metre distance between each other and are sleeping head to feet. Suggests they are going somewhere where they will have direct contact.

No doubt many of you will be wondering where people will be using all those extra toilet rolls after
the supermarket shelves were cleared of them this week and the answer could be they are
buying more toilets !!

Not the Nine O'Clock News - Lets have more toilets sketch

Re: Coronavirus

In our local region- a FB group was formed in minutes with people offering to help- be it with shopping, or with looking after children. Many of them Uni or Gymi students who will be able to help children with keeping up with their subjects, take them to the woods, etc. Families with 1 or 2 children taking it in turn to childcare, etc- people are being incredibly supportive and imaginative. Bravo.

It ia a friend's birthday today. A hugely intelligent man, who has suffered from Parkinson's for a couple of years. Had a pacemaker fitted 3 months ago and reacted badly to anesthesia and has been in hospital, then tranferred to geriatric unit- as he still gets very confused. His wife was told yesterday they are stopping all visitors - even spouses and adult children. I can see the medical rationale for this, of course- but it seems so so cruel at the same time. I could weep for him and his family.

Be realistic. Some people ( alot ) have to go to work and travel on the public transport ( 2 class is full,1 class empty) and they have to sit and relate to fellow workers etc etc.
I give a ride to a co-worker, but I may switch to using the sidecar.

Re: Coronavirus

Own goal, thanks to the US travel ban and screening:

As people scrambled to get home prior to the Friday ban, the screening promised by our dear leader was apparently a pretty big implematation fail. Travelers ariving at Chicago Ohare (a family member included, who corraborates reports of the chaos) were caught in 4-6 hour waits, standing closely packed in a crowd of thousands.

https://www.nbc4i.com/community/heal...ng-travel-ban/

Airport screening falls under the federal government. No surprise that a rushed announcement, with conflicting information coming from the WH, led to a situation where officials were unprepared and insufficiently staffed to respond.

So my child has a high fever and is coughing. It all develops on Friday evening.
Call the usual pediatrician - nobody answers until the closing time.
Call the médecin de garde hotline:
- on Friday nobody answers (waiting for an hour)
- on Saturday there is a message about a call overload and it disconnects.

Calling a hospital:
- please call the médecin de garde hotline.
Once the hotline turned out too busy:
- don't come, unless there are "respiratory distress" symptoms.

I wish the authorities could request (some) of the cabinets to extend their working days in these times.
Otherwise how long am I supposed to wait with a child to check if it is "just" a flu or maybe as it happens there might be already issues with ears or something else requiring antibiotics?
There's a link available now to pre-screen on symptoms with steps to follow. In Vaud, they are disseminating this info to all to avoid taxing health services that are already at capacity

All the best to your son and anyone serving in the military at this time! I'd assume that this might be hard on you or for anyone who has familymembers who will be exposed to a higher risk. I wish there would be something I could do other than moral support. Take care!

https://www.24heures.ch/lematindiman...story/20218942 The latest recommendations, per age group.

I'm leaving this here, from the Seniors section:

Quote:

Soyons solidaires».

Yes. The vast majority of countries take unprecedented measures to lock down, ban flights, close borders, areas, go out of their way to ensure that quarantine at domicile is respected etc, ensure institutionalised quarantine for people coming from Italy, Spain, Germany, France, China etc......well, UK has a different approach.
Don't know what to say, there might be people who agree with it and don't want to run into yet another typical, senseless EF argument.

Each to their own. I am kind of sure they'll reconsider it though, and really really hope they'll do it - for the sake of innocent people.
